Focal Maestro Utopia AMP recommendation

Why don't you set a time to come compare the S3's with the Maestro's. I will have the S3's in mid Feb and I already have the Maestro's. You can hear them with Pass, Accuphase, Constellation, McIntosh, Krell or Mark Levinson. Then you won't have to wonder. You can know what you prefer because you will hear all combinations in the same room. I will also have Soulution and T+A soon. It's just a 3.5 hour drive. I think you would have to drive much farther to hear this amount of gear under one roof. I don't even care if you buy anything, just come listen and give me your thoughts in return.

Hans, I agree it is a matter of taste. For me, I find the Beryllium tweeter in the Salon 2 to be the best I've heard.

The Focal tweeter can be a little sharp at times. I never found the Magico tweeter sharp. And yes, you do need to go see David. A dealer like David can really help you narrow in on a system instead of spinning your wheels. He has Focal, Magico, Raidho, etc. you can listen to several brands of speakers and electronics and cables!

your speakers , Alexia
using the same tweeter as Focal ?

you also Magico S5
you have 2 system because each system are best in specific music category ? (for example one for Jazz and second for Classic

i must visit your place !
i didn't even know you deal also with Magico

do you have also Magico S5?
Soulution , i want to hear the 710/711 with the Maestro

right now there is almost no bass , very weak
very wired!
i don't know if this is how the Maestro should be or if something is wrong with my speakers or my system

I have your speaker cables on hand also. I have a new set of Tara Labs .3 cables that will be here this week. They are not on their website yet but are one level above the .8's. I also have their reference and a complete set of Nordost V2's. I have a bunch of toys you can play with.

It's so nice to have a dealer that carries so many brands and offer someone to audition the gears without any pressure.

Very nice of you :)

My speakers definitely don't use the same tweeter as the Focal Maestro. The Focals use a beryllium tweeter. The Wilson's use silk dome.

I have two systems - one for each location.

pelo911...the fact that your speakers have almost no bass and that your Pass Lab amplifiers are able to deliver the current and output power to drive those bass woofers very well, suggests to me you have a speaker placement/room interaction problem. By the way, how much time have you put on your speakers? Remember there is lengthy break-in for speaker drivers and crossover components before the speaker can sound its best. If you have very few hours on your speaker right now (say less than 50 hours) then I would run them continuously for a week (preferably 2). I would set a CD or your PC on repeat and have a music signal running through the speakers continuously. If there is no one home during the day and there are no neighbors close by to complain, crank the volume up and give those speakers a work out. In the evening and at night time, dial down the volume and if at night you want to make the sound even less bothersome, position the speakers facing one another maybe a foot apart and on one of the speakers, switch the speaker cables at the terminals (that's called wiring them "out of phase") and even cover them with a blanket and let them play (you will hardly hear any sound). So that is advice number one: break in your speakers properly and log some hours on them.

Advice number two is when you have completed speaker break-in above, is to place them back where you currently have them positioned and play some music that you know has some bass on it. If the speakers still sound weak in the bass (especially as compared to the Focal 1038Be's that you had before), then the speaker's position in the room is such that at your listening position, you are experiencing a "suck out" somewhere in the bass frequencies. So what you will have to do is start experimenting with the speaker position relative to how close it is to the back wall and the side walls and see where the bass starts to sound fuller, more clear and differentiated (i.e., more articulated) and where ultimately it starts to sound natural to you (i.e., an upright bass sounds like an upright bass, or a drum kick sounds like a drum kick, etc...). Do this positioning exercise one speaker at a time and when you find the position for each speaker that works best where the bass on each speaker sounds right to you, then you can play around with how far apart they are to give you the best center fill image and how much to toe them in to give you the right balance between soundstage width and treble smoothness.

Once you visit Dave Baskin at DAV, speaker positioning may be something he can advise you on as well. I can guarantee you though that it's not your Pass amps that are the cause of the weak bass you are hearing. Those amps can drive the bass woofers on your speakers very easily and can push enough current to make the Maestros sing. I am not saying you should not consider other amplification as you may prefer different amps with your speakers but just that your amps are not the cause of the weak bass you are experiencing.

Hope this helps.

I agree. My Maestro's have very good bass that is almost too much in my 22 x 15.5 x 9 room. Maybe something else wrong. Your speakers should have come with a special tool to tighten the drivers with. You may want to check and make sure the drivers are good and snug. Also that speaker has two bass drivers, one bass driver and one low bass driver. You may want to check and make sure both drivers are working properly. Also I will make a call to Focal tomorrow for you. Your listening area looks a little small for that size speaker. I had discussed my room size with Focal and they suggested the Scala for my room. They said my room was too small for the Maestros to open up and breathe. I'm not saying this is the case with yours but just giving you more info to digest. I may be mistaken on your room, what are the dimensions?

Mike ,

i like the way you seek for matching AMP:
http://audioshark.org/magico-61/best-amp-magico-s5s-2615.html#.UuVoAxDnaUk

you found one finally ?

Good question. I've tried Accuphase, McIntosh, VAC, Dag. I thought my Alexia's might be more fussy with amplifiers, but damn, everything I put on them sounds great - with the D'Agostino's being my favorite as they are the proverbial "we do everything" amp. But mixing in the Cary amps (with these new tubes I put in today) and the McIntosh also yields stellar results.

With the Magico S5's, the McIntosh is my favorite so far - but I would say the VAC amps have the most potential (I just have to find the right tube combination). Not sure why we don't hear anything about Magico/McIntosh synergy....but the combo sounds great to me. The McIntosh 601's give the S5's such great body and smoothness on top. Must be just me loving this combo out there! :)

pelo911...thx for the pics but unfortunately there is no standard or right placement for all speakers. Each speaker will interact with the room it's in differently. The only way to figure out the proper placement is to experiment and move the speakers around until you find the right spot for them in that specific room. There are no short cuts unfortunately. You can certainly have an expert come in and dial-in the speakers to your room (usually for a fee and I am not sure if Dave Baskin provides such a service or not but that may be an option) or you can try to give it a go yourself. Perhaps provide your room dimensions as well as how far your couch is from the speakers to Dave and he can see if Focal has any base-line suggestions of how to place the speakers. Otherwise, you will have to do the work to find their optimal placement.

Hope this helps and good luck.

you are right , i also think the room is too small
also the space is not ideal , it's 3 floors townhouse so their is stairs downstairs and upstairs , also part of the space
and the room very long but narrow.

13 feet (not include the stairs that add 3.4 feet) by approx 50 feet to the end of the kitchen
9.75 feet height

there is 6 screws in each driver , i tight all of them
it's look i can tight more , but i'm afraid to break somethings

"Must be just me loving this combo out there!"

the most important thing , you should love it , not anybody else ! ;)

usually Magico using Vitus or Spectral
i just don't get it , how SS-101 drive crazy speakers with only 50W !!!

Yes, do not over tighten. You will be able to tell when it's tight enough . Come on over my way and bring your music . I'll set my Maestro 's up and well see what you think. I had to do some unconventional things in my room with the Maestro 's to sound right in the bass .you can bring your Pass amp and I should have a .8 we can play with in February sometime. Those are excellent speakers, they won speaker of the year last year from someone. I think it's just a matter of placement and getting everything to gel together.

i plug the Tara Labs The 0.8 XLR instead of the Acustic zen Silver
very quiet cable , smoother - i like it very much.

then i replace the Cardas Clear with Tara Labs The One speaker cables.
i like the sound more with the Cardas , smoother and with more Bass

this is the first time i'm checking different cables , i was skeptical before
didn't believe cable will make a big different.

should i stick with the Cardas or maybe you think of more models i can try?

I am very happy with my Shunyata cables. But it all depends on the sound you are after. I find the Shunyata cables more neutral and more extended than my previous cables (lower to mid end Cardas and TA cables). Bass has greatly improved. But if possible, I would wait until you've optimized your speaker placement before trying other cables, just to be sure you get the right pair. Just my $.02.

cheers

i moved the Speakers around
i don't feel much different
it's normal?

i thought to try Siltech 770 or Prince / Synergistic Research Element / Purist Audio (not sure what model)
prefer sound with "weight" , resolution , neutral (not bright) , bass

since the Magico Room with S3 and Vitus was my favorite at the CES 2014
i thought to check the option to replace my Focal Maestro with Magico.

someone compare the Q3 with the S5?
i red the Q3 lack on the bass.

what are my options compare to Maestro? (not must be Magico , for example i never heard Rockport)

computer:
i want to improve that area
Aurender S10 or CAPS V3 Zuma or Macbook Pro
not sure what will be the best option to replace my Gaming PC.

Thanks
