DeVore O/96

Jerome...I will be real interested to see if you decide to keep the W8s after the SBs arrive and have had some time to settle (figure a few houndred hours at least). My guess is they will offer the resolution and soundstaging and dynamics you find so appealing in the WP8s but will do so with a bit more relaxed tone and natural timbre than the WP8s (again I am purely speculating having never compared them side by side). Please let us know how they develop as you log some hours on them.

Paul...you are a busy man. Congrats on the O96s and the Super 8s! Looking forward to read your comments and to see which TT you end up with. Good luck!

Cyril,

That is my secret hope : to get the dynamics and the image and the bass quality ofthe WP8's but with a sound a bit more natural and also to allow the CCQ to express their full potential.
I am listening tonight for the first time to the the WP8's with the C48 preamp and the vintage 2205 (200 W of SS ) and all I throw at them in digital from the AMR sound absolutely gorgeous and the bass is clearly head and shoulders above the bass of the CCQ. And all this will be much better with my Giscours preamp. But boy I love the vintage Mcs so much that I could forget the last degrees of resolution of the Shindos and stay with vintage Mcs only.
This 2205 just kills the sound I had with the 2301's monoblocks on the WP8 !
Incredible....
Overall my guess is that I will keep both the SB and the WP8's and will enjoy each of them much more after separation : you then realize fully the strengths and shortcomings of each one and you can enjoy them much more....

Cool ! Welcome to the real life of in home music !
I Ordered the SB and paid them in full.
No idea when they will be here !

Jerome. Big disappointment. This is the reason why I always hesitate to buying a used goods . We ( seller an I) had more than 30 emails each other and finally I was able to pick up the super 8's. Btw it was located at one and half hour from me. ( 3 hours both way ) I sent him a text this morning and updated with him. Our appointment was at 2:15 and he called me at 1:59 and I was having another call other line so I couldn't answer the phone and I was only 5 min away from his house anyway. so I got there walked in to the living room.

There was the super 8's waiting for me but with his grind face he told me he just found the problem with the tweeter. (On the left speakers it was pushed in all the way ) and he claimed his house keeper might done it few days ago. He had a perfect feed backs and he sent me some pictures ( he said happen to be pictures was taken from right speaker only.- I don't really get it ) so I never doubt about the condition. ( I shared with Doug)

He said he called the dealership and found out the price of the tweeter ($150 ) and asked me take it for $200 less than agreed price so I was thinking ( oh also I found couple of nicks on left speaker as well ) I pay less than $200 and knowing that I have to spend $150 plus tax and labour not even mention the time I have to spend with it and drive back and forth to dealer. Wow.... I just left with empty hand with bad feeling.

He sent me a text that he is sorry...now who is going to pay my 3 hours of my driving time and the gas ?

That really stinks Paul. I know you were really looking forward to the Super 8's at your place. It doesn't sound like he was trying to pull a fast one on you since you were coming to pick them up. I never really look at the drivers of my speakers myself and maybe when he was packing them up just noticed it and called to let you know. I imagine it wasn't a very pleasant drive home. :reallymad:

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

Thanks Doug.... Jerome told me to not to purchase the Super8's since I'm getting the O/96's maybe that was the sign..or should I say a jinx.

+1, sucks to hear that, Paul. :(

I've changed woofer drivers on my 10Ts, twice. It's not that bad of a job if you still want to consider it. Not sure if a tweeter is more complex or not, but something to consider.

Cheers buddy.

Paul...changing out drivers is fairly simple and your dealer should definitely be able to do it, however, I can totally understand if the whole experience put you off from buying these specific set of speakers. For now, you can look forward to the O96s arriving and if you still want the Super 8s, keep a watchful eye on Agon and tell your dealer to call you first if he gets any on trade-ins (by the way if you can get a deal on the 88s even better) and pull the trigger then.

Sorry again for the aggravation but hey you have a superb set of speakers coming your way to look forward to.

Paul,
" Even bad things happen for Goodness".
In hebrew, we say " Gam zou Le Tov ! ".
I understand your frustration. Do not look at the gas you spent. Look it this way : you just SAVED more than 2k dollars !
Honestly, the O96 will be more of everything.
John DeVore is a serious guy. If he sells a speaker for 12k and an other one for 4k, you do not have to take bets on which is the best one !

:) You guys are the Best.

Update : The seller just contacted me again. He said it was just a dust cover was pushed and his brother in law just came and fixed it in 5 seconds. So the tweeter is fine now...however my mind is not.

I saw few times people comparing the DeVore with the Harbeth....Anybody has the experience on Harbeth M40.1 VS DeVore O/96 ?

Paul...if you still want them, find out from your dealer exactly how much it will cost for him to replace the driver (time and materials) and add $100 (for the extra annoyance of having to deal with the repair) and ask for the seller to reduce his price by that much. If he wants to get rid of them badly enough, you get a nice deal with some aggravation involved. If he does not, you pass and move on. That's what I would do in that situation.

Did not receive the O96 and already thinking of selling them towards something else...
if this is not audio psychosis, I do not know what it is....:D

Jerome...Cyril is referring to what happened on the Super8's not the O/96 :)

Paul: Those are Dynaudio Esotar tweeters, I highly doubt that they are $150 to replace. Maybe just the dust cap, but I'd ask the seller to do this first with the local DeVore dealer, make sure he has a receipt that shows the work was done and who did it, before contemplating the sale again.

Sorry about the trouble, but I also think you might want to check out the O/96s first... but maybe because I am drooling over them myself! :peace:

I'd save time & go with the 20.7's. This is a win win & big :) all around. Then again I could be a tad bias.

Kev. Does the 20.7 is warm sound ? With my experience last time it was very clean but not warm sound at all or was the my room issue ?

I do miss my Harbeth sounds so I might go back to the Harbeth. If the DeVore doesn't give me the sounds I want.

Paul

I still think you should check into the Reynaud's. They will give you the warm sound you are looking for and Bob Neill gave up the Harbeth's and Spendor's for them. Plus the pricing is much more reasonable. Another alternative is the Audio Note's.

I would consider the O/96s warm, but detailed. Really something else IMHO. Please post your thoughts once they are in your home, it's good to hear other people's perspectives.

Paul, it all depends on what your fuses are, the jumpers are made of, your cables/ amps /pre/ source etc. The Maggies to me are one shade into warm from neutral, I love detail so I went with solid silver jumpers from the mid to treble, which can lead to a shrill treble with some recordings, so silver speaker cables were no good in the mix, this is why I will move to copper speaker cables. The long & short of it is you can tune them with the rest of the gear/synergy to make them sound however you wish. They are very revealing of what is upstream.
