from the decca Rachmaninov box - cd 24: Vespers op. 37.

beautiful choir music, in a big church - great sound and Rachmaninov's famous "golden tone" par excellence.

Mike and Allen, those are among my favorite audiophile albums. The Johanos was first an Absolute Sound Super Disc back when it first came out on Vox-Turnabout. I have both an original blue cover and then the green cover, as well as the Athena reissue which was also named to the Super Disc list. The Reference record was an original digital recording that Paul Stubblebine remastered for vinyl, as he has done so well for the past two or three years for Keith Johnson and Reference. I think Paul was involved with the mastering of the original. I have the vinyl and the HRx 176/24 version of the master file that Reference released a few years ago. When I was choosing the equipment I needed for my huge ripping project (now complete!) my consultant Tim Marutani arranged a big shootout back in 2010 with different hardware and software. He had Paul S. conduct the shootout and just for it, Paul cut a custom lacquer of the first side of the Rachmaninoff Symphonic Dances and we used that as one of the test LP's for the shootout! This was quite a bit before the current set of Reference LPs were started. Too bad Paul didn't let me keep the lacquer.

Hi Allen, do you know whether this was cut from the original tapes or the digital copy they made for the big Callas digital reissues (IIRC at 96/24). When EMI first released the album on their SAN Angel label, they issued it in two different ways. There was the regular box, which I have, and a much more expensive deluxe box. I have never seen that one except in photographs - but I think it had a fancy booklet inside, nicer than the booklet that came with the regular box. IIRC Callas never sang Carmen on stage. As a true soprano, Callas's voice lies higher than the normal mezzo range of a typical Carmen.

Chad re-released a 45 rpm set, I have it but haven't played it yet:

I have the Athena and the orig Vox box, the Athena was the one to get for the longest time, im sure Chads 45 wont disappoint...and yes, the sonics are spectacular.

Hi Larry,

On Acoustic Sounds, it says these came from the master tapes stored in France and approved by Ms. Callas herself. But the noise floor (lack of tape hiss for example) is so low that suggests to me some digital manipulation somewhere along the chain. But that's just speculation on my part though.

Rob, I have the AP reissue. Without A/B'ing vs. the Athena, I think I like the AP more. Rounder, fuller, warmer. I'll play it tonight to see if memory serves me right.

That would've been nice to keep the lacquers!

What's the life span of a lacquer? It's pretty short, though, no?

Larry, do you know what the EMI/Angel box set numbers are that you reference above for the "regular" and "deluxe" boxes?
 
Wow Allen, you have a lot of Ansermet in your collection! I think I maybe have two or three is all. :(

Mike, the regular box which I have is EMI SAN-140-1-2, while the deluxe box is SDAN-143-4-5. I have the entire EMI SAN (Angel) series except for the deluxe box, which I seem to remember is red. The front cover of my box is the same as Allen's, except without the Warner Bros logo.

This wasn't the most expensive out there, but it wasn't cheap either.

Yes, I do know about the RCA/Decca series. I've subscribed to it. Some of my favs are in this series. But I have a bad habit of buying multiple copies/pressings of the albums I love. Still buying the CR 45rpm set of Royal Ballet.;)
