That's too bad Allen. Is the noise still present even after a cleaning?
 
Allen, the Mozart box is from the London Stereo Treasury, which is essentially like the Decca SDD and SPA albums - mostly (like the Mozart) reissues of earlier full priced Deccas. They were most done starting around 1970 and many of the very pricey Decca SXL albums were reissued (using solid state electronics) on these bargain priced labels. A very good way to get introduced to the music, and generally excellent sonics. There was a patch of them in the mid 70's where the vinyl was noisy, because of the oil embargo and resultant lower quality of all things made of petroleum.

Hi Larry,

The sonics was pretty good. It doesn't have the warmth of say the recent AP RCA reissues, but nice soundstaging and imaging.

I was going NUTS trying to figure out where I heard the melody to the second movement, and then 7 minutes in it hit me: Eric Carmen!!!:P
 
And the third movement second theme is "Full Moon and Empty Arms" popularized by Frank Sinatra, among others. This record was originally released in a Reader's Digest box with all four concerti and the Paganini Rhapsody. Engineered by Decca for RCA (which did most of the recordings for Reader's Digest.) Probably the best recordings released by Reader's Digest and one of the Absolute Sound Super Discs. Several other of the Reader's Digest recordings were released by Chesky at around the same time as the Rach 2. My favorite is the Sibelius Symphony 2 conducted by Barbirolli. Great music, great performance, great sonics.

Ha, very interesting, Larry. I have to go hear that song now.

I've been enjoying the Chesky reissues lately. They can be found for quite cheap and I enjoy their overall balance of sound. I hope to get more.
 
Recent purchase, first listen. Music is very dynamic,explosive at times. A reference quality recording from, well, Reference Recordings.

IMHO, it's one of Keith Johnson's greatest recordings. I have it on vinyl (original RefRec analogue, 2 record set), tape (Tape Project from the analog master), and RefRec HRx (176-24 digital transfer from the analog master). Looks like the CD that Allen has was taken from the digital master. At that time, 1992, Keith was recording in parallel, doing both analog tape masters (for his vinyl releases) and digital masters for his CD's. 1992 was before Keith introduced HDCD for his CD's (1995).

Oops, it was actually the LP I played. I got this image off of Discogs I think and didn't realize it was for the CD.

Agree, for this era and of the LPs I have, I do like this one the most. But Keith's Oue era of LPs/CDs I like a lot too. Fantastic dynamics and even great sense of soundstage.

Larry, sent your LPs back yesterday. You should receive them tomorrow or Thurs. Hopefully they arrive safely. Thank you again!:heart:
