Broke my S5s last night.

I will pick them up Monday. I broke the tweeter and mid-range, at $800 each. With labor, the total is $1960. While I would prefer $0, I can live with the result of my mistake.

However, it appears the real cost here is going to be much higher. I have been using my HT/spare stereo for the last two weeks, and, since it is basically made up of previous two channel gear, it sounds pretty good. Anyway, now I have the upgrade bug and want a Bryston SP3 for the pre-amp. Until I broke the S5s, I was content with both my stereo and HT.

+1!

Bud, I paid $250 for my Aerial 10Ts woofers, with me doing the install. $800/driver for those much more advanced drivers and them doing the install... not a bad price at all! And they checked out the other speaker as well. Good deal!

+100

Plus at the end of the tour I got a really nice Magico T-shirt. That alone was worth the repair price. :)

It really will be nice to have those bad boys back home doing what they do best. Playing music. Now that I think about it, I would be a good beta tester for the M line. Sort of a final test to make sure they are ready for the real world.

Bud

An you explain a bit more why the tweeters and midrange drivers failed?
Would have Magico fixed under warranty if you were the original owner.

Does this mean Magico speakers do not play loud without failing?

How loud and how long did Magico say you can play them before they fail, especially as you indicated there was no distortion when you were listening?. These are supposed to be full range speakers.

Important questions for me at least, as I like to crank music and have never had this type of failure with my Vienna, Sonus Faber or Wilson speakers - my old small Naim speakers I burnt a couple of tweeters.

XV-1, from my perspective, the speakers failed because I f**ked up. I didn't ask whether this was a warranty issue since no warranty covers abuse. I wasn't listening to a Shostakovich string quartet at the time.

Speaking with Alon, he said based on my description it appeared I just exceeded the capability of the amp, and sent DC to the speaker. While there is no denying the S5s can definitely rock, everything has a limit, and I exceeded that limit. I knew that while I was playing since I realized it was too loud. Unfortunately, my realization and physics occurred at the same moment.

I can't really answer your questions since 'loud' is a subjective term. Alon did say I should get a bigger amp if I wanted to play that loud. :)

Since I felt it was too loud when it failed, I think I will keep these amps. I would suggest reading various audio forums to get an idea of how these speakers work in the real world. Other than mine, I haven't seen any other failure issues.

Thanks Bud,

I think you are very kind - not totally sure the failure was all yours and your amps.:skeptical:

Interesting Alon said you need a bigger amp than you X600.5's. 1200 watts into 4 ohms is not enough for Magico to play loud? I wonder what amp is?

Don't just look at watt output also look at the output current.

X600.5 not that powerful with only 36A current, the newer X600.8 more powerful at 50A.

The S5 is rated at 118 dB and a 1200 watt amp.
