Broke my S5s last night.

Bud

An you explain a bit more why the tweeters and midrange drivers failed?
Would have Magico fixed under warranty if you were the original owner.

Does this mean Magico speakers do not play loud without failing?

How loud and how long did Magico say you can play them before they fail, especially as you indicated there was no distortion when you were listening?. These are supposed to be full range speakers.

Important questions for me at least, as I like to crank music and have never had this type of failure with my Vienna, Sonus Faber or Wilson speakers - my old small Naim speakers I burnt a couple of tweeters.

Take an SPL meter and try. According to Bud he was measuring in listening position 110db continually, that means he was hitting ~120 dB peaks . If you can even get that high with your set-up, watch what happen, and report (I don’t think your setup will play that loud, but put Lady Gaga on, crank up your preamp all the way and try). ;)

P.S.
You may want to check your loudspeakers/amp warranty terms first...

Guys,
You think the Evo900 is too much for my SF Toys ?

:D

Don't just look at watt output also look at the output current.

X600.5 not that powerful with only 36A current, the newer X600.8 more powerful at 50A.

How much difference would the extra 14A make? The max amp of my XA160.8's is also 50A and I am now running S5's so I'm curious.

Interesting Alon said you need a bigger amp than you X600.5's. 1200 watts into 4 ohms is not enough for Magico to play loud? I wonder what amp is?

I don't think the comment was about being able to play loud. I think it was meant to keep from breaking the speakers while playing loud. Having the pre at its max, I flat lined the amp, sent DC to the speakers, and broke them.

I just hope that after I get them back the pre and amp are okay.

Your electronics should be fine, I've never heard of an amp being damaged when pushed past its limits into clipping. Too bad the same isn't true for speakers but you learned that lesson the hard way, as many of us have also done over the years! :(

My HK 3490 survived the assault my girlfriend gave my towers which ended the life of the tweeters. Then again only way to test the electronics is to hook up a pair of speakers, Bluefox, got any cheapies stuffed into a closet to use as sacrificial items just in case ?

I have four LSi15s standing around gathering dust. At first I was going to hook two up, but then I thought I will just keep the Pass amps turned off, and build up my solar credit for this winter.

I swear...when I get a passport...I'm comin to your house, take a listen to them Magico's...and smuggle a pair of those LSi15s... :)

Tomorrow is the day. Pick them up, bring them home, hook them up, and start breaking jn the new drivers. Hopefully, nothing like this happens again for a long, long time.

Bud needs a volume that only goes to eleven.:)
Seems like all's well that ends well.
Better luck with them now.

cheers,

Well, I am now back in business. They are in place and have been warming up for over an hour. So far I cannot detect any difference between the two. I didn't check to see which one was repaired. I want to try and determine which one was repaired, and I have a 50/50 chance of getting it right.

This time I have them in the same locations, but more toed in directly to my seat, wheras before they were slightly more angled outward. Sounding good so far.

I have to admit this was a stupid, and expensive exercise. What a pain. However, I want to thank Alon, Dave, and the rest of the Magico team for their hospitality, and making this as painless as possible. Thanks guys.

I guess Friday night I will find out if these new drivers can handle Pass power. Just kidding. :)

How bad is the Pass x600.5 when it comes to your monthly electricity expenditure if you do not have the solar power?

Terrible with tiered CA electricity rates. These amps are one year old now. I used them around 2-3 weeks last July for billing purposes, and my electricty was $400 for July. That was double the previous July. That also includes the increased AC use. I ordered solar in August, and became a generator in September.

Wow, I am thinking, or just dreaming of getting the x350.5. The high electricity bill just turns me off. So I guess for the electricity bill may be on the $200-250 plus AC if I decide to get the x350.5. Maybe I will stick with my x250 for the moment.
