Balanced Lampi Dac - Joe you are famous now

KR has really gone sideways since Riccardo Kron passed away. Eunice has not really done things right IMHO. I wouldn't touch their tubes with a 10 foot pole.

You dont have to. Lukasz can act as the guinea pig. LoL

Yup, that is why I was confused too. This is old info and he needs to update the website. I think on FB he said 101d only and that is why my pal on WBF was surprised to hear of 45s being permitted.

I called on behalf of Joe yesterday and got the full update. I have laid out the logic that I was given and why. 101d only for the moment with the possibility that 300b will soon be allowed and further posiibility of 6A3 working in an underheated state like for SE, but may still sound good like we veterans found in the case of SE Dacs. See my post #97 on the website for more details.

Thank you Norman. Looking forward to Lukasz's answers going forward. Exciting times.

Can someone describe to me what the toggle on the back of a Big 7 does, specifically the one that seems to switch between tubes (101d vs 300b)? That toggle doesn't seem to be addressed in the manual.

Thanks.

I believe it switches between two different voltage settings. Possibly between 2.5v and 5v for the different tubes.

When does one use it?

Also, how does one switch between DSD and PCM? The unit didn't come with a remote so I figured it was that toggle switch.

In the 101d position you can use 101d, 45, 245, 345, 6a3 (sort of) and a couple others escaping me at the moment.

In the 300b position you can use 300b, 2a3, 6a3 (more correct electrically and probably better for the tube, but 6a3 sounds better to many on 45/setting).

To toggle between dsd and PCM simply press the front panel button (the "O" in lampizatOr).

Enjoy!

Fred

Joe,

Thanks for posting the User Manual. It's an interesting read!

Ken
Its on his website at the download page. I posted it a day or 2 ago.

IAN, as I asked 2 days ago, please post a picture of the rear of the unit if you want people to help.

I have no idea what the various units look like!

Actually wattage bands for the self-balancing circuit.

We SE Dac types have been all over this ages ago at AudioCircle.

As I said in my big message 2 days ago, the SE units have a high and low setting, labelled 45 and 2A3 setting respectively, corresponding to something like 4 watts and 6 watts tube circuitry. Watts = VxAmps.

For 45 triode and 101d, use the low setting. For 2A3, VT52 and 300b use the high setting. For 6A3, Lukasz recommends the high setting, but most people were either agnostic or preffered the low setting, even if it means the 6.3v tube is under heated. Theoretically, underheating shortens tube live, BUT as this is not being run at power amp levels, the fact that the tube is plentiful and cheap and that people have several tubes to roll to change presentation…nobody cared about a theoretical shortened life that would mean a change very 4 years instead of every 8 years (if run constantly).

WRT tube rolling, most wont constantly change tubes on a consistent basis, HOWEVER, most will play around initially to find their favourite combinations and stick to that. For example, Mike and Any seem to have settled on the Eklrog 300b as their star DHT in the GG and now I suspect they seek to find out which recti best complements that.

Yeah, what Fred said!

Regarding rectis, a pal just emailed me telling me about NOS Brimar 5z4gy tube abd how he is likeing what he hears so far. It turns out that I bought one (quite reasonably) from the UK in Feb and forgot about it. I happened to see it when hunting for the GE JAN 5R4gy to mate with the new EML meshplate 45s I bought last week. Talk about overwhelm. I have those to try out over the unfurling Summer. Nice!

Quick question: To upsample PCM to DSD in JRiver, should I use the '2xDSD in native format' option?

I'm wondering what this option does to regular (1x) DSD...

Thanks in advance!

I haven't sat before a jriver setup in a while, but I believe that is right, or at least how I remember upsampling dsd to double dsd.

There are a few schools of thought on whether it hurts the tube. I am not smart enough to say one way or the other. I run WE 275as on the 45 setting as it sounded better in to me.

Is the Dac working now?

JRiver is a shitty upconversion modulator. Free Foobar is better. Download trial version of HQ Player which trounces them all. It will play via Mac for 30 mins at a time in demo mode and will play for a month in PC as a demo. Signalyst.com

The DAC is working now. The fuse was blown but it comes with a spare.

The only issue I have now is that one channel is MUCH louder than the other. I'm guessing the tubes aren't matched (either that or one of my interconnects is playing rude games with me!)

Hmm, I am pretty attached to JRiver because of the awesome JRemote app which I've invested a fair amount of time in to customize. That said, I will check out HQPlayer.

Thank you, Norman.
