Balanced Lampi Dac - Joe you are famous now

Well my Lampi arrived today (instead of Monday) - yay!

Unfortunately...
1. It's too deep to fit in my rack
2. It's too high (with tubes) to fit in my rack
3. It has a loose screw rolling around inside it
4. I didn't get a manual and there's a toggle switch in the back that isn't labelled
5. I can't get it to turn on.

Sigh...

Call Rob and Fred…they will help you. Hopefully its not real shipment damage.

Post pictures too…so that switches can be identified. Likely the on/off switch. You need to toggle to on and then depress the front button to turn on. The togle at the back powers the tube and the front buttons powers the output stage.

Manual and USB drivers are online here:

Sorry to read that Ian. I am sure all will be straightened out quickly.

Hope you not going the repair route with it, have them send you another ............

Congrats Joe! It sure is cool looking. I much prefer the aluminum to the original B7 box (although the GG copper is my fav). I am really curious to get your thought s on PCM. Lucasz's DSD is quite singular in its exceptionalism (both sound and approach); nothing I have heard quite compares in the digital domain. But I still haven't decided if PCM would be in the cards for me via Lampi when I do digital. Enjoy!

The DSD is pretty darn special after it is broken in. JRiver on my Mac will encode all files including PCM as DSD. I did a shoot out of PCM and CD versus PCM encoded as DSD on Lampizator. The DSD won every time. So if someone is holding off buying the DSD only Dac because they want to play PCM files pls know that you can do that and they sound great.

Awesome Darrin. I am already thinking ahead but so absolutely LOVE what I am hearing. Can't wait until it breaks in, I get a new rectifier and better USB cable. NOW I'm having fun!

Hi Ian,

Can you place it on the top shelf of your rack and support it with blocks or Stillpoints underneath to handle its depth.

I'm sure Fred will help you out with any issues you are having.

Best of luck,
Ken

Darrin, have you tried the same upconversion with HQ Player instead of JRiver? MUCH superior delta sigma modulation engine. You will get another great leap FWD in SQ! Even the Free Foobar has a better modulation engine than JRiver. JRiver's advantage is just user interface. Its equal to the others when playing native rate too, but not up converting.

See the iFi Stiffy thread for HQ Player settings details.

Yes sounds like your unit is mighty special and the fact Joe Knows Audio and you now own Lampi they are officially legit! I am waiting to find out what tubes I have in the dsd DAC so I can tube roll too. They sent me the second DAC with the first dac's spec sheet.

Yep. Convert PCM with Saracon or HQPlayer and you may never play PCM again. Before I jumped ship that was my plan. I think the DSD from Lucasz is as close to analog I have heard from digital, fwiw.

Will soon update you with what I know Mike!

Hi Norman,

This information is from the Lampi website from their new page on Lampi Balanced DSD Dacs. Are you saying this information is incorrect?

Thanks, Ken

All DHT DACs are now available as balanced: with 4 output triodes and 4 output caps.

That applies to the Golden Gate, The Big 7 and the Lite 7 .

The compatible tubes are: 101D and 45/245/345.

NO 2A3 or 300B are approved

Ha! Darrin, you are way too kind. Thank you. :D

I really need to set up my computer properly. I may help but, so far, so good.

45's on the balanced is no good from what I hear/see. I know it says that on the website, but probably not a good idea to put in 45's just yet.

I think 45's may run a little hot.

You are welcome. 300B's may be qualified in a few days. Stay tuned. This may seem like a bit of work in progress but it IS very well worth the extra effort. Just listen with an open mind, you will be highly rewarded.

KR has really gone sideways since Riccardo Kron passed away. Eunice has not really done things right IMHO. I wouldn't touch their tubes with a 10 foot pole.

Yup, that is why I was confused too. This is old info and he needs to update the website. I think on FB he said 101d only and that is why my pal on WBF was surprised to hear of 45s being permitted.

I called on behalf of Joe yesterday and got the full update. I have laid out the logic that I was given and why. 101d only for the moment with the possibility that 300b will soon be allowed and further posiibility of 6A3 working in an underheated state like for SE, but may still sound good like we veterans found in the case of SE Dacs. See my post #97 on the website for more details.
