Do you own any music mainly because it is some audiophile workhorse and really don't like the music?

I'm going through my collection and wondering why I have so many different copies of the Fountains of Rome and the Pines of Rome by Respighi. I don't even like the music that much. One copy would be enough.

The other record is Grand Canyon Suite by Grofe. I finally got that down to one copy.

A few. Admittedly, bought an expensive classical album that Fremer raved about and I heard briefly at CES in a room he was in. But after listening to it...MEH.

Time to upgrade your system like one in the show ? :yahoo1:

When I first got into this gig, Diana Krall studio albums were all the rage. Since I was pretty excited about the prospect of enjoying some great jazz recordings, I bought em' before I even had a chance to hear em'. As it turns out - that was a mistake. The recording quality itself was fairly solid, but when it came down to the come down, I felt like I was listening to sappy soap opera music. And not the good, Star Wars or Game of Thrones kind either. I'm talkin' about something along the lines of vintage Childrens hospital material.

Funnily enough, I still listen to and thoroughly enjoy her 'Live in Paris' album. You can judge all you want.. I ain't ashamed!

I'm not much of a Diana Krall fan either but I do thoroughly enjoy 'Live in Paris'. It's a great album with excellent musicians and high recording quality.

I like some of her music, but now it's Diana "make my skin Krall" because it has become overplayed in many circles.

I agree with Ken about "Live in Paris"

Zero.......I agree, Diana Krall - Live In Paris is an excellent recording and performance. I also have it on Blu-ray. Excellent concert.

Humm ... basically No.

It's not unusual for Classical music listeners to have multiple versions of a single work (or set of works). But that's usually because we LIKE the music, not for audiophile creds.

So for example I have 7-8 partial or complete sets of Shostakovich's string quartets, and a least as mainly versions of Beethoven's string quartets; also multiples of other composers' string quartets. I also have about as many Beethoven symphony sets or partial sets. ETC., etc.

I'll admit that I'm often interesting in a new version of a work hoping for better sound quality, not just the different performance. However in all cases it's because I like the music.

BTW, I have on version of Grofe's Grand Canyon Suite but haven't bother to rip it to my music file; I have one version of Ravel's Bolero but haven't played it in years. And only one version of Respighi's Pines set -- Does this make me a Classical snob? :S

I have too much Jazz and blues. I subscribed to all of the Acoustic Sounds Jazz sets except Fantasy 1&2. I haven't got around to opening some of the sets yet.

80's is my favourite era. I can never have enough music from that period.

I did the same.. Krall and pat barber were all the audiophile favs. They were recorded well, but not very “good”.
Yet when Diana Krall came to town, I saw her in concert. A small theater in Dallas. She was great ! she broke out of her overly rehearsed mode and came alive ! She was great ! Which is probably why you like the live album.. My fav is her tribute to nat king Cole.. Great album.. others, not so good.. Pat Barber is terrible but her recordings are great for bass tests.., IMO

Great question - in fact I have one copy of each of those pieces and never play them either. As a matter of interest who's versions do you favour? I have Dutoit / Montreal's Roman trio and Kunzel / Cincinnati's Grand Canyon. Nothing to compare them with unless I delve into Qobuz.

Should we add Orff's Carmina Burana to your list? I admit to 2 copies of that - Hickox and Jochum - wait, I've found another probably never played - Blomstedt. Maybe I should punish myself and listen to it tonight! In fact there are sections I admit to enjoying.

Same here , the woman puts me to sleep if that says anything. We saw her in Jacksonville Fl at the Jacody Symphony Hall April 2015. "unimpressed'

obviously a 4 year old thread re-booted here.

my 2 cents is that i fall in and out of love with certain artists, recordings, and compositions. which is why i own 10k digital albums, 8000+ Lps, 300 master dub tapes, and subscribe to Quboz and Tidal streaming. music is mostly emotional connection, and discovery, but sometimes is part system investigation or just wanting hear recordings that do certain things. our relationship with music is dynamic and contextual.

there is no wrong reason to listen, or wrong reason to get excited or joyous about the music.

the last few weeks, Taiko Audio, the company that builds my music server the Extreme, has been developing new music library software (called TAS....a Roon alternative with full focus on SQ). so it's caused me to revisit some digital references, and they now sound fresh and new. one of them was Patricia Barber's 'Modern Cool' in 24/176 and 24/192. it was a big WOW for me. not listened to it in a year or so. but there is no denying that it's an amazing recording and shows just how crazy great digital can get. which then triggered more Patricia Barber. she had been dead to me, but then came alive......i got it. and away i went.

did i feel guilty? should i have felt guilty?

there are no rules. sometimes we have to grow or evolve into music, or even regress or find another path into music. it's why we collect music and don't just throw it out when it is not speaking to us.

no different with certain classical compositions. last weekend i had 4 guys drive up from Portland for a listening session. one of them wanted to hear the 4th (final) movement of Beethoven's 9th. so we played the Solti Decca. loved it. after they left i played it again. this week explored other Lp and digital versions.

that is how it goes. i have maybe 20 digital and 7-8 vinyl versions of that piece and it took a trigger to jump into it. it's not the music's fault it does not have my current love or attention. not saying it's not ok to dislike (or get bored with) Diana Krall or Patricia Barber. knock yourself out. you might find if you explore 10 other female jazz singers you might change your opinion of Krall or Barber, or dislike them more. but be open to seeing things differently as time goes on......or not.

i'm sure a thousand times i have bought music and listened and did not get it, but then later i figured it out. i had to grow, or find a path back to it. or run across it accidently and try it again.

Mike, our Taiko Extreme continues to impress beyond what we thought was possible every single day. Talk about peeling back the onion. Shockingly real is how I would be describe what it does to music.

Also glad TAS is becoming a reality, I’ve been preaching “Roon degrades the sound!!!!” for a long time, but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears. It will be interesting to hear what the proprietary Taiko USB drivers do to the sound as well. Emile is leaving no stone unturned.

To me, Taiko and Aurender are really focused on sound first, second and third. Taiko being the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport and Aurender being the Porsche 911 GT3 R.

Mike, yesterday morning Emile (from the Netherlands) and Wilson (the programer who lives in Canada) were in my Extreme and MSB for about 90 minutes making changes in my set-up optimizing the Alpha version of TAS and i was observing and commenting. they made the first install of the Taiko USB driver for the MSB.

exciting developments for sure. and i expect it's only the beginning. having a software platform to be unconditionally optimized for a no holds barred hardware platform can only be good news for listeners. no third parties, multi-channel considerations, or conflicting agendas. like F1; if it does not lower lap times then we don't need it.

fun to be a part of.

an interesting thing is it has improved Roon performance too, but there is a gap to where TAS is.

Hi Mike,

How is the functionality of the TAS interface compared to Roon?

Ken

Anxious to hear impressions of W20SE vs Taiko Extreme as to their sound differences ...
