I agree on that conclusion. But my Zellaton's have changed my opinion that cones just will never cut it. Zellatons are very fast like ESL's, but image much better. And with no crossover on the mid/bass driver and being open baffle, they have even better detail and clarity than the DD ESL's have.
I think every speaker has an "optimum" configuration and setup, and so can sound awesome when done right. However, there are several that seem to wrk in most places, and others that I have usually never heard work very well at all. Magico and YG come immediately to mind. Thiel's and Maggies generally need proper equipment pairing and are finicky to setup and so usually sound unbalanced, but I have heard both sound awesome too. The big KEF blades don't ring my bell either (shouty and boomy). Sonus Faber's seem too tame and overdamped.
After living with panels for some years now I guess my biggest complaint is that most cone speakers have a very noticeable imbalance between the tweeter and woofer. They don't sound "of a whole" to me anymore.
