Well respected speakers that you don't like

I agree on that conclusion. But my Zellaton's have changed my opinion that cones just will never cut it. Zellatons are very fast like ESL's, but image much better. And with no crossover on the mid/bass driver and being open baffle, they have even better detail and clarity than the DD ESL's have.

I think every speaker has an "optimum" configuration and setup, and so can sound awesome when done right. However, there are several that seem to wrk in most places, and others that I have usually never heard work very well at all. Magico and YG come immediately to mind. Thiel's and Maggies generally need proper equipment pairing and are finicky to setup and so usually sound unbalanced, but I have heard both sound awesome too. The big KEF blades don't ring my bell either (shouty and boomy). Sonus Faber's seem too tame and overdamped.

After living with panels for some years now I guess my biggest complaint is that most cone speakers have a very noticeable imbalance between the tweeter and woofer. They don't sound "of a whole" to me anymore.

Ok Tom, now I'm confused. Thought Zellaton was a driver manufacturer, but now see that they make entire speakers, per their site....but no open baffles. Yours??

cheers,

AJ

All of the current Zellatons are open baffle. They just don't look like it.

Are you saying this is an "Open baffle"?

If the sides of the enclosure are solid, as it appears and the openings are at the back as shown, then physically/acoustically, it's an aperiodic enclosure.

cheers,

AJ

All the reviews says open baffle. The baffle extends top to bottom of the speaker. All I know it is the best I have heard in 40 years. I was a dealer for 15 of those years.

I try not to write off any speaker, as know that sometimes it can be the room, associated equipment or both :)
of course there will always be some speakers that just wont suit some styles of music, that doesnt make them bad, just not for me.
I have heard my own speakers sound horrible, and sometimes that has been in stores. Unfortunately though, this is then most peoples first impression of a speaker and it does become a lasting one.

This is easy. B&W.

I've never been a big fan of their Diamond tweeter. I've found that it can sound rough at times and not blend seamlessly with the midrange. If not for the tweeter, I would be fine with them. Just my opinion for what it's worth.

There is a saying that "The truth shall set you free." The part they leave out of that statement is that the truth sometimes will open up cans of whoop-ass. I hear that members of the Gibbon family can be pretty mean. :afraid:

Speakers I've always appreciated but never "gotten" are Magicos. For whatever reason, they tick all the right boxes (resolution, smooth, well-constructed, pretty, etc...), but, I've not fallen for them. There is, for me, a slight "horn" presentation that nags at me despite their resolution, deep bass, and smoothness.

To be fair, I've only heard the S5s (on three occasions) and S1s but I'm now tainted and, notwithstanding an earth shattering demo, my impression is slowly becoming set in stone.

Electronics I listened to with the Magicos were Constellation, Spectral and Esoteric (class A). Cabling varied from full MIT and Synergistic Research.

This is, naturally, my subjective opinion and YMMV.

So I just happened to read this post and notice that you own S5's... did you opinion change or were you just being sarcastic?

Aesthetically, my wife was happy to see my B&W 802's go. I felt the presentation of the 802's was a little forward. We are much happier with what replaced it.

Don't you just hate forward speakers? The least they could do is wait until the second date before they try and put the moves on you.

Just read this thread for the first time......very interesting. Kinda hard to find a speaker that didn't make the list. Ain't it great.
