Vocals or Instrumentals?

I do use a Bach Cantata choral. What do you use for large scale choral auditions. I don't have a good enough recording of Ode to Joy.

Also I find Choral to do a different thing (soundstage, separation, and midrange), as compared to the speed and slam of orchestrals, as well as the brass in Orchestrals (Mahler Bruckner)

A few choral recordings I use for auditions are ...

... orchestra resource are a bit small but there is also pipe organ

I have this one in high-rez; a very clean sound ...

And this one is also favorite; Durufle's Requiem is a gorgeous, lush work ...

I like both, though lean toward to vocal. Whenever i'm listening instrumental , it depends on my mood. Especially once me get up in the morning, i really can't accept those high speed instrumental music, e.g free style jazz.

I don't know why.

What is your preferred style of music?

For me, it's vocals about 90% of the time. I love the sound of the human voice, along with great storytelling. It's what makes music talk to me.

Your question, "Vocals or Instrumentals?....What is your preferred style of music?" appears a little to vague to me.

Are you asking if folks enjoy say, Diana Krall (voice plus a few accompanying instruments) vs. bluegrass or jazz or classical styles mainly instruments with no vocals or just a few "yips, yodels, chants or yahoos" thrown in? Or are you asking if people prefer a true A Capella presentation vs. pure instrumental?

Or are you asking what people focus on regardless of music type if it contains both? E.g., listening to Sonny Sumpter and either focusing on her voice or listening to the instruments that accompany her?

I'm just not sure where you'd put a band like the Doobie Brothers in this "vocal or instrumental" choice. In the Doobie's example, I sometimes listen to bass or guitar riffs and focus on the instruments and other times love to sing along (in my head only :lol and focus on the vocals on something like South City Midnight Lady.

p.s. I just listened to the Doobies Live SCML on youtube. I just can't choose vocals or instruments as a preference. Both would be lost without the other with the Doobies.
