Two new Lumin Network Music Players released today

Thanks Mike for the info. Did you ask them about the upgrading option for existing A1 users?

I didn't....but I don't think that's going to be an option. It's a totally different design, chipset, etc.

My Q&A with Li:

1. What is the main difference between the A1 and T1 since both have the same chips?

A1 and T1 are the same, except the chassis. In theory, the A1 solid aluminum case is better for EMI shielding and reduced interference from/to other devices. We want to release a lower price A1 with almost the same audio performance, hence more people can enjoy the LUMIN.

Thank you Mike

I'd like some info about the L1 that is available now, according to the site.

But there are scant details about it, other than that it has a network connection and looks like the power supply.

Like how much storage is included? Can multiple L1's be hooked up together?

Hopefully, if you get the S1, you can try out that power supply on your A1, too!

The Lumin streamers are not equipped with storage, they are meant to be used with a NAS drive.

Mark - I think Rnrmf is talking about the new LUMIN L1 Music Server:
LUMIN L1

It's not quite like a NAS because to put music on, you don't use the network, you use USB.
But then when it's on the network it automatically behaves like a server.

It's not a music player of any kind.

I'm afraid I don't have the answers to your other questions Rnrmf.

I emailed Lumin on the L1, wanting to know it's hard drive capacity, no idea what it cost either. unless Mike you already know

From what I read it's a simple drag and drop of your music into the L1 and your A1 can just access the music and play

I will ask Li and let you know. I've also asked Li to peek in here and answer directly. Li is psme (username).

The L1 sure is a cool concept.

I for one hope Lumin change mind and accept additional revenue stream by offering to sell the S1 power supply to A1 owners. The S1 has X2 DSD and different processor so A1 unit even with S1 power supply presents no threat to prospective S1 buyers.

Geoffrey - if you're looking for another PS for the Lumin, I can send you my Ken Lau PS to try.

Mike

More info on the L1:

The L1 Lumin Music Server is expected to have a capacity of 1TB and will be available before the end of this year. Details on this unit are located at: http://www.luminmusic.com/lumin-l1.html The great benefit of the L1 is that it ships as a preconfigured NAS. This will eliminate the need for consumers to build and populate a NAS. From the L1 web site it is stated: Simply drag and drop your music onto LUMIN L1 like a USB disk drive, and then place it on your network to immediately start serving.” So….after a user loads their music, they can then plug one end of the L1 into their wi fi router with an Ethernet cable and they become fully operational using the iPad Lumin Application. The new music server drive will show up under the music library selections. Final pricing is still TBD but the unit is expected to have a MSRP from $800 to $1200. This is still to be determined at this time.

Not quite the feature set I had hoped for, but still nice looking!

This device requires yet another power cord/another open AC connection in wall/on ones power strip and as mentioned limited storage @ 1TB. As alternative the My Passport 3T hard drives frequently on sale at Costco, etc. >$100 and no extra power cord or open AC connection required.

That's generous offer Mike. I'm inclined to wait for Lumin to sell S1 power supply if and when. Online posts here and on CA regarding KL's power supply all over the place.

I was kinda thinking the same thing. I need more details about the L1 and if it makes sense to jump to Lumin for a NAS but at limited HDD space. I already use a Synology DS413 NAS with Seagate 4 -2TB HHD for storage.

Maybe the L1 is something I will not need when I purchase a A1 or the T1.

Someone from another forum has posted a link to the internal photos of the S1; see feverSound.com | Lumin????

Looks like the main changes are the 4 Sabre ES9018 chips in place of the 2 Wolfsons and an upgraded PSU (bigger and upgraded caps). Let's hope that the sound justifies the doubling in price over the A1 . . .

Like I said in my CES report, the A1 remains the sweet spot - unless, you're just dying to hear all 13 of those double DSD albums. IMHO, the Wolfson DAC chips in the A1 are sonically superior to the SABRE ones in the S1. That has been my experience with all SABRE DAC chips. The only reason Lumin is using SABRE chips in the S1 is because they handle double DSD (apparently having a DSD capable network music player wasn't enough for some, they wanted double DSD). That being said, I'll withhold final judgement until I can do an A1 vs S1 shootout.

And for a real value, check out the T1.

My advice is for people to stop fretting over the price of the S1 and just buy an A1 and start hearing just how good digital music can sound.
