I went to their web site but info not there. Where do you see them?

Wow, the price for S1 :disbelief::disbelief: not sure if anyone have listen to it? Is it so much better than A1?

Tks.

I wonder what they did to the original Lumin to justify the 2,5x price increase. I still remember lumin was $3k, then went up to $6k.

I was thinking the same thing :shocking::skeptical:

I mean - when manufacturers increse the price 2,5x, the product usually looks much different, in terms of build quality, internals etc.

Lumin was already great looking - the box made from billet aluminium etc. The new one looks exactly the same, and even if there are some differencies, I doubt they increased the BOM.

Same for the internals. If the box is 50% of your BOM (typically) and it didn't change, the electronics should be 5x more expensive to manufacture - sth I do not suspect is the case.

I know a guy who knows a guy! ;)

I know the folks at Lumin very well. I'm stunned by the price of the S1 too.

Hi Mike, do you hear anything from them about the upgrade path to existing A1 owners? I read somewhere (here or other forum) mentioning they will provide an upgrade path to existing owners a while back. Not sure if they are still considering that? Are you able to ask them?

Thanks.

I can ask Li, but I'm not sure. I'm trying to talk him into some sense with the pricing on the S1. Wish me luck. $9200 seems like a sweet spot to me. $15,000 seems high.

Top of the line S1 uses Sabre chips - isn't it what audiophiles want? The first one was too cheap for many to consider it an "audiophile" high-end player (even though it sounded better than most), and it didn't do double-rate DSD. So the guys from Lumin did what market/customers wanted them to - a new model, one that sports "audiophile" DAC chips and does double-rate DSD, and now it cost enough to be considered "high end" product :-) And yet - you're complaning.

Thanks, Mike. Initial show reports mentioned that the S1 would be priced at up to S$10,000, so the indicative pricing is incredible . . . even if I have been informed by someone who has heard the S1 say that there is "stunning" improvement over the A1 on PCM.

As Elberoth had mentioned, the BOM could not have increased by that much (unless further details of the parts improvements are released down the road). It was reported by someone in HK that each Sabre ES9018 costs about US$50, so about US$200 per S1. Its not clear how much more this costs than the Wolfson chips in the A1. There have been reports of other improvements, clocking system, etc. but unless there are further details, it is hard to understand the price increase.

I have been informed though that the stock S1 power supply is much better than the A1, and Lumin has indicated that this may be ordered separately, as an upgrade to the S1.

On the upgrade path for A1 owners, Li did mention earlier this year that there were plans for an upgrade option later, with the cost being the difference in the retail pricing between the 2 (at that time, the retail pricing of the S1 had not been finalised yet). Whether this is still the plan or whether the upgrade cost will be the same remains to be seen.

If the RRP had been about US$10,000, an upgrade would have been attractive to existing owners, especially since the upgrade of the PSU alone would be about US$800+. I would have been tempted but, at twice an A1, well ...

While your asking, ask him what is the main diff between the A1 and the T1 since they use the same DAC chip etc... I can handle the A1 price but maybe the T1 would be a better fit into my budget.

BINGO!!!!!! I was going to say the same thing but bit my tongue.

I notice there is 1-bit playback for S1 spec but not the T1 (I assume A1 too). Anyone know does that means? Isn't DSD natively 1-bit? What does S1 any special here in playing back DSD?

Anyway, thanks Mike for trying to talk to Lumin. Hope there are good news there :)

My Q&A with Li:

1. What is the main difference between the A1 and T1 since both have the same chips?

A1 and T1 are the same, except the chassis. In theory, the A1 solid aluminum case is better for EMI shielding and reduced interference from/to other devices. We want to release a lower price A1 with almost the same audio performance, hence more people can enjoy the LUMIN.

2. The projected cost of the S1 was to be around $10,000 USD, why the price increase to $15,000 USD?

My initial guess of the S1 price is around USD10k. But I have no saying on the final US pricing!

3. It is rumored that the S1 will have a better power supply then the A1. Can A1 owners purchase this new power supply separately?

Yes, S1 uses a bigger and enhanced PSU. It uses the same power socket and voltage spec and one can use a S1 PSU on A1. But there is no plan to sell the S1 PSU separately...
