Turntable Shopping - Need some opinion.

Just checking in to see what's happened.

Paul, any action?
Please email me directly. I don't want to keep posting possibilities and filling the thread with : "well you could..." comments or statement. I still hold that the ES-R1 is a great option, but I may have stumbled into something interesting.

I'm still jealous of your system ...and I have some LS3/5A-alikes at my place:)

Hello Paul,
I bought a used AMG TT a couple of weeks ago. Been waiting for one to appear on the used market.
Paid 7700 Euros (got it sent from Germany to Sweden).
It´s a great TT. Amazingly built. German engineering at it`s best.
Fantastic bass.
Much better than my previous TT (VPI classic I mkII)

Tero - Welcome to the Shark and I hope that you continue to get much enjoyment from your new AMG, it is indeed a superb turntable and tonearm! To be fair though, it retails in the US for over five times the price of a VPI Classic 1 so I hope that it would be significantly better.

You are right, The AMG should be significantly better. Seems to be.
I haven`t found the right phono cable yet, so I can´t really make a true comparison. But it sounds already better with a simpler cable at the moment.
Does anyone have any suggestions to what phono cable to buy?
(I have Jorma Prime in the rest of the system, they don`t do phono cables)
Tom Evans Mastergroove as phono preamp, Miyajima Shilabe PU.

This doesn't say too much coming from an SME dealer, but....

I say 20/3 with a Cadenza Bronze or Black for a table that's up there with the best, a decent amout of money but not crazy.

Beautiful engineering and build, top notch support with a 10 yr warranty, not made in a garage, does not follow fashion, One of the last few great audio companies, actually so is Ortofon too.

when i was putting together the money for a new table and i had just sold my classic1 . i had 3 choices. a classic 3 , the merrill i bought, and the sme 20/3 with V arm. i heard the classic 1,2,3,and 4 a million times. but when i heard the sme i was blown away. but was a little out of my budget. then i heard the merrill with triplanar and ort black and fell in love. of course the triplanar also put it a little over my budget. was close to same price as the sme 20/3 and V arm deal. then a deal fell in my lap for the merrill with the ort arm and cart. so i went that way. but if it didnt it would have been a little more saving up and a really tough decision. and if i had heard the sme with the cadenza black it might have tipped the scales that way. who knows.

Don't mean to derail the thread but the amg is often sold with a cardas made/amg badged cable. There are 3 levels to choose from ranging up to $1500usd
They are great but i swapped mine out for a balanced din/xlr stealth hyperphono that i like better. Pm me if interested in the difference.

Hi Tero, welcome to the Shark Tank. You are going to love that AMG table. I have not heard it with too many cartridges, but the Benz LPS is outstanding. The premium cable mentioned above is indeed Cardas. I had mine terminated to fit my balanced phono amp, and I've been very happy with it. My dealer, who had not heard the AMG until I encouraged them to carry it, compared it very favorably to SME 20/30. And he loved it with the Benz.

Again, welcome to the tank!
