Price is not of concern to these guys, it was chosen because they sounded better and yes i do believe a mod is being done to the input stage.
Do you have any direct experience with the different modules ..?
What amp are you talking about? The Merrill audio Thor's? If so they use the UCD's because it was developed before the NC500's came out. The reason that they have an NC500 based amp for cheaper is because it uses a $10 input buffer, single power supply, and they had no choice because competition came out with NC 500 based amps that were priced low. Since people tend to judge a complete amp based on the modules alone, it's impossible to charge lots for an NC 500 based amp now no matter how good it is. This has nothing to do with the quality of the module.
And yes I've been building amps based on the UCD 400's since 2007 and amps based on the NC 500's for a year now.
