The speaker fairy showed up today - JBL 4367 !!!

Price is not of concern to these guys, it was chosen because they sounded better and yes i do believe a mod is being done to the input stage.

Do you have any direct experience with the different modules ..?

What amp are you talking about? The Merrill audio Thor's? If so they use the UCD's because it was developed before the NC500's came out. The reason that they have an NC500 based amp for cheaper is because it uses a $10 input buffer, single power supply, and they had no choice because competition came out with NC 500 based amps that were priced low. Since people tend to judge a complete amp based on the modules alone, it's impossible to charge lots for an NC 500 based amp now no matter how good it is. This has nothing to do with the quality of the module.

And yes I've been building amps based on the UCD 400's since 2007 and amps based on the NC 500's for a year now.

Joe, for me, it was always about how the cabinet reacted with the music as we know they do. Once this came to the fore the Strads started to get the warm & fuzzy in a very good way I might add. I never thought they were a speaker that lacked detail but put side by side to a clinical speaker & the apparent is obviously stated. I gotta say those "thangs"are really making me think there may be a really good fork in the road ahead for me, please keep us updated.

congrats, Joe. lots of new goodies :)

curious what amp in the end works best on the big horns.

Thank you Keith.

My immediate thought was that my McIntosh gear would be the natural best combo.

After the initial setup with the Ayre, I may need to rethink the "best" combo. These JBL's are so smooth and sweet that I think my Bryston 28's might be the odds on favorite for rocking out on them. Sure the ART monos will be killer and I'll find out this weekend, but the sheer power and control of the 28's could be surprising, especially with the Ayre KX-5/20 preamp driving them. There is no substitute for actually trying a particular combo. More fun down the road.

Absolutely Kev. And yes, I agree with you. I could not see me offing the Strads and wanted something different and fun in its own right. These 4367's are a blast and wonderfully engaging. They are a great counterbalance to my Strads. The horns in these just present the music right in front of me without any or very little room interaction. The sound is immediate and room filling. They are a winner for me.

One more thing, they are not silly expensive for the fun quotient they provide. How can you beat that?

Wow Joe, nice speakers! I'll bet with 5 or 10 watts you can make the ears bleed... Those are probably really efficient right? Again, very cool, very cool.

Hi Mike,

They are 94dB @ 6 ohms. Minimum recommended is 30wpc and I find myself playing them at a higher volume numerically than my Strads which are 92dB @ 4 ohms with minimum 20wpc recommended. They certainly benefit from power and I got that feeling from the reviews. They do sound great though.

I'm going to try the ART monos this weekend. I think the match will be wonderful. I think the MC75's will be fun. I bet the ARC GSi75 could be great too.

Joe my dealer has a pair of the S3900's, so I can image how nice the 4367 sound. The dealer is using AR tubes and nice, very nice.

I've been out of touch lately, so I wanted to say a huge Congrats to you on your new JBL's!

Congrats Joe!!!!!

:congrats:

Thank you so much Mark. I am enjoying these JBL's immensely.

So Joe... been anxiously awaiting to hear which amplifier you feel are the best combo with these monsters :).... I would guess either the Bryston or McIntosh....

I've tried the following:

Nord One Up w/ Sparkos op amp
Accuphase A-36
Ayre KX-5/20
McIntosh MC-75 new reissue monos

Next up will be CJ ART monos, Jolida 3502 w/ KT-150's and Bryston 28BSST2's.

I have to say each has their own strength but the tubes sound best to me. Depth increases exponentially with more air and separation. These are the smoothest, most fun speaker that I've heard. The MC-75 monos have probably been my favorite so far, but I suspect that the ART monos will kill all easily. The Accuphase A-36 lately has actually been the best solid state overall by a hair, although a little more power could seal the deal.

As much as I want to get away from tubes, I love their sound best.

If you want to get away from tubes, the secret is in complete system synergy. The digital end is the most important.

Nice.... you and your tubes :).... I would not be opposed to a MC275 one of these days.... But I am all in with digital now so............... I have got to try a Statement when W4S has one available. One of these days I got to get KEF References again. When I get a pair of those I can guarantee that you will have to pry them out of my cold dead hands... hopefully many years down the road :D....

My only reason for scaling back on tubes is because my system is playing 10-15 hours a day and almost all weekend.

Why not try an ARC REF 6 pre with the Ayre amp? Should be a very nice match.

I have a Ref 6 but I don't feel the same about it as everyone else.

Only for those who don't listen to analog.

I only listen to the voices in my head.
