Taking the family to New York, and staying at the Plaza Hotel this December. Need input...

Type of food? There's a great Greek (Molyvos) spot right near there. Bistro Milano for some great pastas is also a few blocks down. Del Frisco for steak is also a solid contender (probably not up to Luger, but damn close and a really nice restaurant with unbelievably good service). Mediterranean - Avra. Straight up Italian: Paul & Jimmy's.

Drinks @ The Warwick is also quite amusing (great bartenders).

For Pizza, check: The 12 Best Pizza Places In NYC: Gothamist Most of the ones listed there (not the odd looking flatbreads or coal burnt stuff) are very solid.

Are you looking for the uber high end like 11Madison/Baloud? Or more down to earth stuff?

Two of my favorite restaurants are the Gotham Bar and Grill and Gramercy Tavern (sit in the rear dining room). Spectacular food at both.

Molyvos is also good.

We also like Bobby Flay's Bar Americain.

Price does not matter either way. Just a good experience.
I do like the coal (burnt) pizza. What is considered the best place for coal pizza?

I will look into the places mentioned.

Mr Chows was not good, a couple years ago.

Any Grand Havana Room members here? Nice place!

I hear Grimaldi's is awesome. It's over the Brooklyn Bridge if you make the hike there. I tried to get some but the line was too d*mn long!

Oh, any NYC trip always has at least one journey to Ferrara (espresso & cannoli + other pastries) and Junior's (cheesecake........).

Top of the line stuff: Daniel, 11Madison Park, Gramercy, Per Se.

Personally, I always enjoy the 2AM street vendor grande hot dog and pretzel... but that is usually from the drinking. ;)

Coolest place I found, though, for some simple "lounge-y" drinking was at Flute (54th & Broadway). Superb service (the two main girls that work there were not bad on the eyes), good drinks, very good bubbly list (that didn't totally gouge you). Just a cool old speakeasy kind of feel (couches, dimly lit, etc.)

Some excellent choices E. I found Daniel a bit stuffy for my tastes, but his sister restaurant, 'Cafe Boulud' had equally good food and a more comfortable and intimate atmosphere.

Per Se is a definitely worth a visit if you've got the scratch. Their Oysters and Pearls are to die for!:satisfying:

I know….I know, but…..For a totally different experience…a vegetarian restaurant in the East Village. One of the hottest restaurants in NYC, but there is about a two month wait to get a reservation. "One of the only Michelin-recommended vegetarian restaurants in America"…...Dirt Candy.

the way i go is rosarios for pizza
golden unicorn for chinese
il cortile for real italian
carmines for eggplant parm!!!!!

If you go to Grimaldi's you could take a trip over to Oswalds Mill Audio to see some freaky looking and very expensive audio equipment, especially their Imperia horns.
