I cannot do a system restore anymore! ...Windows XP

Before when it was happening I changed the date, and at worst it took about five tries.
But now I cannot do it at all, even after trying a dozen dates!
Anyone can help?

Number two: Ask.com (Internet Explorer main browser) with Windows 8.1
I hate it! How can I get rid of it and replace it with something like Bing for example?
{I have a dedicated Google Chrome page, so I don't want to repeat it again with IE.}

* Yesterday my smartphone upgraded Google Chrome automatically, and I have an habit of deleting my history...
But! This time around my history was also deleted in my PC!
It seems that my PC, laptop and smartphone are all related together now! I don't like it; I prefer independent devices for those type of functions.
It's a drag because I had to register again my username and password at several audio sites this morning!

Life with a PC, laptop and smartphone doesn't always go the way you would like; and it seems to be happening more and more.
...Just like in real life with the wife and kids and all the bills.

I think total freedom is to live in the jungle up high in a tree. ...Go down every day to hunt for food and return at night to sleep protected from the tigers and snakes. ...And of course to meet Tarzanne (Jane) who live not far in another tree (best not to live in the same tree, so we have our own space).

Ok, what do you think, and how can you help me out?

Ok, first take a breath.
Now, are you using Win XP or Win 8?
If your using XP to be on-line, you should not be. XP is no longer safe to be on-line with. If it wasn't bad before, it's like an open door now to hacking and all kinds of stuff. In fact, there's not even a door there anymore.
Unfortunately, I know nothing about Win8 aside from reading up on the design and knowing I want no part of it.
Windows 7 which I now use is not much better.
Smartphones? I despise them and will never want one for any reason. I hate Smartphones they are worse than regular cell-phones to me.

To replace your browser (and you should if your using IE) just go to google in whatever browser your currently forced to use and find the browser you prefer to use, ie Firefox, Chrome, etc. download it and install. You will most likely get a prompt the first time you use it asking you if you want to make it your default, choose yes.

I may be way off on this though because I don't understand what is going on with all the syncing your experiencing. Perhaps you go too fast when installing or updating something and just click away without reading the fine print? I don't know. I usually take installs, updates and all that real slow so I can uncheck all the crap they try to load on you.
I agree, the right tool for the right job. The only thing I want syncing up is what is supposed to be synced up and only the parts I choose. Don't sync my photos up to my Squeezebox. Don't sync my photos and docs up to my Roku. No thank you , I do not need Flicker on my receiver or amp or what have you and get the facebook outa here on all devices.
It sounds like you may have something turned on within one or more of your devices that you would prefer to have off. Maybe there is some setting in Control Panel on the PC (if Win 8 even has that) that says "ok, sync everything in the town up to all my devices" or something turned on. The answer would be to turn it off.
You want your browsers to update, that's a good thing. You might want to look in your browsers for choices of how you want your updates. Perhaps some give you a choice of full auto to "don't even tell me there's an update, I don't care and don't want it."
I personally don't like Chrome on the PC, it's too automated and allows no control. It's fine for tablets as that's what it was built for actually.
I'm also not a fan of BING, it's too pushy and restricted. I use Firefox.

Now if your talking about what page your browser opens to (home page) that is easy to change as well. Just got to the page you prefer and on the options for the brower your using there should be something allowing you to make current page my home page.
Having to register your name and passwords again at sites indicates something much more than erasing history is going on. Erasing history should not effect accounts on websites. Now if your talking about Auto-fill, then that's a whole separate thing and not a big deal.

Sorry I'm not much help on this. Perhaps more detail would help?

Firefox and Win 7 all the way. IE, well Microsoft have been updating their system like crazy with updates for IE. I for one will not update my win7 PC with these updates...

Thx Eric.

Can you have Google Chrome, Firefox, and another browser?

How do you make Firefox your main browser for IE? ...The one they stuck me with is ask.com which I hate with a vengeance.
I need instructions one step at a time; like if I was using a laptop for the first time in my life (actually it has only been a month and I got a virus today in it). And yesterday I got one in my smartphone; should I get an anti-virus in my phone?

Eric, you hate smartphones, and I hate all the bull shit from PCs, laptops, and smartphones: That BS is all the crashes, the viruses, the bad apples, the paranoia from some sites and some people, the very slow responses, the confusion, the misunderstanding, the misinterpretation, the quickness to wrong judgement, the impatience, the aggressive tonality (audio distortion from speakers), and all the things that make life miserable and not worth living. ...Do you understand? :)

It's not worth it to try to be perfect; this world wasn't created to be a rose garden. I'd rather run all nude around the neighborhood wearing only a pair of running shoes made of rubber and look-a-like leather. ...And yell at everyone I met. :D

Seriously, I'm done with fighting; they can have all the hackers in the world but they won't hack my shack.

Yes, you can have as many browsers as you want on your PCs. They all put up icons and you just choose which one you want to use for that moment.
Your not making a browser within a browser your main one. Your getting Browser and Search Engine confused, they are not the same thing. Browsers = IE, Chrome, Firefox.... Search Engines = Google, Ask, Bing.....
You make a search engine your main one that pops up when you launch your browser. Just launch your browser of choice, then in the address field up top type in the search engine you want www.xxxxxxx.com (replace x with google, bing, etc), once your on the page of the search engine you want go to your options menu in your browser and find the section where you can choose to make the current page your home page and your done. Now every time you launch that browser you will get the page you set.

How are you getting viruses on your PCs? Are you not running a decent anti-virus program? How do you know they are viruses? There's also malware and hacking, spying and control issues to be aware of. Oftentimes people mistake malware for viruses. A good combo of Anti-virus, Anti-Malware, Anti-spyware programs (one each please) will keep you mostly safe. (There is no perfect in PCland, Audioland and most other lands). Of equal importance is safe practices which states DO NOT CLICK ON WHAT YOU DO NOT KNOW! Clicking on ANY Advertisement will open you up to viruses, malware, you name it. Do NOT open emails from things you do not know. Do not open emails from places you know do not communicate via email. Do NOT click on ANY links within an email and that includes the onse that look like they are officially from your bank, Fed-Ex, etc. That is used a lot too. I've received emails looking exactly like they are from Fed-X and UPS etc saying that there is some delay or something about a delivery I'm expecting. (Trust me these things look very official, it's amazing what photoshop can do. You have to look very close to see that they are not official. I have caught a number of this type thing at work and I'm not an expert or even in the IT department. Unfortunately, there are others at work that just click away and end up infecting their machines and sometimes others on the same hub).
In this case you simply ask yourself "Hmm, was I expecting a package"? If not, don't even open the Email to look. If you are expecting something look, but don't click. Also, you'll know it's ok if you instructed FED-X or UPS to email you with status updates. If you did not do so, then it's fake. This is just one example.

Yes, apparently viruses and such have become a problem for android devices like phones and tablets, so companies have come out with anti-virus programs for them too. For instance AVAST makes an Anti-virus for smartphones and tablets and yes, the free version is all you need.

Some of the BS is here to stay I'm afraid and you have to learn to deal with it if you want to have a PC, etc. Sadly, it comes with the territory. All we can do is our best to cut the BS back. It's just a matter of using your head, the PC you came with.:)

Eric thank you for the very very informative post above. I learned a great deal from it.

* As for the virus (laptop); yesterday when I opened my laptop there was a siren (like a cop siren) telling me that my system has been attacked!
I'm not making that up; I had to scan everything and then fix the problem(s) by clicking where it was saying: "Fix All Issues".

And how would I know where it's coming from when all I do with my laptop is to visit audio forums and that is it.
With my PC I do more stuff, like searching for info, Christmas cards, baby powder, posting on audio and video and philosophy and scientific forums.
With my phone I occasionally talk, google, and fool around like a little kid with a little toy.

Anyway you are now my man for the smartest life directions regarding that stuff and all that jazz; thank you so much!

* I need an anti-virus for my smartphone; two days ago I think I slid my finger across some advertisement by accident (so goddamn easy with such a small screen), and it changed many things for the worst! I hate it now! My smartphone is not smart enough and it's a sadphone now. ...Man, my phone sucks! ...So I can totally relate to what you were saying earlier.

Too many things are wrong with our world Eric; better to stick here at AudioShark where everyone is friendly :peace: and smart and knows how to live life the right way. :) ...With peaceful music :audiophile: and joy in their heart.

What Anti-virus are you running on your Laptop?
You'd be surprised where viruses and malware can come from.
Also Bloatware (the crap they load onto new off the shelf PCs (laptops/towers) can behave like Malware/viruses (Some of it is malware).

Uh, you do "baby powder" on your desktop PC? I'm not sure I want to know about that. I know it isn't the real powder stuff your putting on it, other than that, I don't know.

If your Smartphone is Android based look at AVAST for an Anti-virus for it. To me, Smartphones are not worth the hassle they are. The screens are too small to display anything. If I had one it would be a train wreck in seconds flat since I can't even see the screen (with glasses) my finger would be hitting everything there is on it. I have enough trouble with my 7 inch tablet - I only use it as a remote control and play video poker on it occasionally. I tried surfing the web, going onto AS, etc with it and the screen is just too small. I kept hitting the wrong stuff located right next to what I wanted, etc. and I have long slim fingers!

Brian, nowhere can I find a Safe Mode.

To get to Safe mode you have to access the boot choices upon start up. That is usually done by holding down a key at a certain point while booting up. I am not in the habit of memorizing what key does that and it's different with every OS.
The easy way to find out is to Google: "Booting (insert your OS here) into safe mode". You should be able to find the instructions that way. You could also go to Windows Help on your PC (found in the menu or use the search function in the menu) and find it there I think. If your using Win 8 I would not even begin to know where anything is because they got stupid with that OS and hid everything and blocked access to you need. I don't know why.

F8 at bootup, or you go into start run msconfig and set it to boot to safe mode there and restart. You will need to set it back when done

Jesus Christ! ...This ain't for first grade kids! ... How To Start Windows XP in Safe Mode

And! What is my Windows account password! ...Or the Administrator's password!

And! Because Windows XP is no longer supported who knows what kind of damage one can inflict by pressing that F8 key, and going through all that complexity! ...Is it safe?

Are you running WIN XP? If so, you should not be using it to go on the internet!
Pressing the F8 key won't hurt anything. What it will do is bring up safe mode.

You most likely need not worry about an account password or Admin password if you did not create one when installed. If someone else created those things, you may have a problem, but it is fixable, however, I fear it isn't something you will be comfortable with at all.

You also might get better answers on a PC or Tech Forum rather than an Audio forum. I'll PM you with one.

1. Free Avast (in both my laptop and PC).
2. I don't know all the crap they load laptops with Eric, I just bought the goddamn thing.
3. "Baby powder"; yeah, for babies...you know...hold them up by their feet and 'pouf-pouf' them gently with after-bath baby powder.
4. My 'sadphone' is a Droid (Moto G - Goggle based). ...Just google Moto G for more. ...It's a KitKat phone (Android). ...And with a small 4.5" screen.
5. I will look for Free Avast for mobile phone. ...But it's also true what I said earlier; with such a small screen it's very easy to accidentally click on the wrong spot! And I bet that's exactly what happened and now I'm fucked! ...Excuse the word please. :)

* Maybe smartphones were mainly invented for small kids with small fingers and not knowing all the expensive costs involved?
Some teenagers have to get two jobs and new parents (richer) just to pay their $100+ monthly fees! ...And just for a goddamn little phone to text messaging the most banal things to their little friends and play those ping-pong games! ...And talk sometimes, that too. ...About nothing! ..."How do you do? Oh fine I just met that new girl at school and she's into occult sciences; ouija board." !

Eric, do you read the posts? How many times do I have to repeat myself; the "restore" operation that I'm trying to do is for my PC running Windows XP.

Yes!

We have people here who are PC technically knowledgeable enough to help me out; plus they are friends too. ...No real need to check somewhere else. :)

And I do miss Rob. ...But you guys (Brian and you Eric) are a great help (only if Eric could read my posts first though). ;)
{I'll try to be more precise and clearer in the future, and by employing larger texts.}
