Streamer selection

I thought I had replied but can’t find my reply. A couple of things:
- you need to connect your WiiM to your network (Ethernet or WiFi). When you do that you don’t use Bluetooth (that means you do no need to pair anything).
- you connect Qobuz to the WiiM directly (they will communicate directly via your network without the need for the iMac)

If your son is around for the holidays ask him to help you set it up!

Thanks for the response ! After a Manhattan(or two) and a fair amount of patience I got it figured out and all is well ! For starters I'm utilizing the WiiM's onboard DAC as opposed to the one in my SACD player (Marantz Ruby).

As Stephen and others have said, streaming is obviously a great way to explore new music, for at this stage of my life I 'm less interested in buying more physical media.

Interesting that you mention your phone. I've the WiiM up and running utilizing Qobuz through my desktop (iMac) but for what ever reason I haven't been able to pair up my phone (Samsung A42) yet ? Can't figure out, on the phone, how to pair things up ? LOL, Yes, technology will test my patience !
There may be a way to do what you want, however whenever you attempt to mix an Apple anything with others there are usually all kinds of hoops you have to jump through. Using a Samsung (Android) through an Apple computer is definitely challenging. They want you to use 100% Apple devices, the hell with flexibility and controlling your own gear... Apple does not allow this.

It is all personal preferences. A buddy of mine is very into streaming to explore new music. He also has one of the largest vinyl collections I have seen. I personally have a difficult time deciding what to listen to (what album, vinyl or digital, etc.) from my current collection... I guess I have far too many hobbies to keep me busy during my retirement. Between my guitars, my art work, reading, etc., etc., that I really don't have enough hours in a day to explore other music on a streaming service :) .

Now that I am becoming accustomed to 'streaming' I have begun to realize I hate working off my phone, all 'thumbs' ! So here's my next silly question, what's everyone's preferred tablet size, 9, 10 or 11 ? Android or Mac, yes I know android will be the least expensive.

I agree tablet is much better. I've had better luck with the 11" iPad.

You can get them on great sales now.

I think you'll find you use it for more than you think and I personally don't like the size smaller than 11" (tried it).

It's ok if you get a new in box last years model as it will still have more than enough performance for you.

Hi Dave, I personally use my MacBook laptop when selecting music for streaming via Qobuz, or playing ripped files from the RMS (remote music server) and I also occasionally use my iPhone, but a number of my friends use Apple iPads. Whatever size works best for you will be fine; I don't think from a functional perspective, there's any significant difference between using a 9, 10, or 11" tablet. I can't speak to Android products as I've never used them.

Cheers.

Dave

While most of the streamer software "will work" with Android the most seamless operation will most always be with IOS as it is just one standard while Android software has quirks for the different device manufacturers. The generation before the current one iPads are on sale new at most vendors for 40% off right now. That would be the 9th generation iPad.

Gentlemen, thank you for wisdom and advice ! Cyber Monday is right around the corner, 'ole Grandpa here will be ready !

11 inch iPad, of any recent version. iPad mini if your eyes are good, and fingers normal sized or smaller.

One word of warning. If you jump into the Apple world there is no easy way out. They have built in methods to control every aspect of your tech life and do not play nice with anything but Apple. Also, anything you purchase from Apple, music, movies, etc., is lost if you move away from Apple.

I personal love Microsoft Surfaces (you know, the one you see on the sidelines at every NFL game). They are a hell of a lot more powerful than any Apple out there. Play very nice with almost any other tech product you own (even somewhat with Apple so long as you don't hand full control over to Apple). My Surface that I use as my Roon control works amazingly well. I also use it to remote in and control my server if I want to do any functions on the server. I have had it for years and it still blows away any iPad you can buy.

So much better than any iPad out there, with amazing service behind their products, and at a fraction of the price of current model Apple products. You have to buy older, obsolete Apples to get deals, and every few years Apple changes their OS with the older products becoming unusable in connecting to newer Apple products. A built in forced upgrade schema.

In my last year of working (before retiring) I replaced all of our engineers Surface's with new ones. Their old ones (original Surface 1's) still worked absolute perfect, but at almost ten years old the new ones had a ton more power. The old ones were used out in the field and they were beat on. These new surfaces became their only computers. One quick USB-C connection and they were instantly hooked to their keyboard, two monitors, the companies network, mice, other USB devices, etc., etc. You simply can not do this with ANY Apple tablet, period... end of story...

Think wisely before jumping into the Apple world when there are amazingly better solutions out there for less than half the price that performs multiple times better (without the HUGE advertising budget that is Apple; remember Steve Jobs knew nothing of technology, he was a marketing wizard; he was a master salesman).

The best choice is neither iPad or Android tablets, but instead a Microsoft Surface tablets. Vastly better, more powerful and much less than Apples.

I have the latest Iphone 16 Pro, the I-watch 10, an Ipad Pro 10.5 inch and old Ipod classic 160 GB. It costs a bit more, but they work amazingly well together, and the ios is supported for a long time.

Nothing to warn about: they make really nice stuff and gadgets.

I recently replaced my legacy Squeezebox Touch with a Wiim Ultra, but paired it with a Topping E70 Velvet DAC, as I prefer the sound of the AKM 4499EX DAC chipset (and analog outputs) vs. the Wim's ESS 9038Q2M. Fortunately, the Wiim Ultra includes Squeezelite, so I still use Lyrion (formerly Logitech) Music Server as the control app. It "sees" the Ultra as just another Squeezebox streamer (along with 7 other Squeezebox devices all around our house). I can play any of my 2000+ CD's (ripped to FLAC) or stream Qobuz, Radio Paradise, etc. from any/all of them, synchronized too! I haven't played around with the Wiim's EQ or sub out features yet, but probably will at some point. IMHO, Wiim is running circles around the mega$$$ streamers (even Eversolo and Bluesound).

Absolute... if you go full blow Apple then they are fine (they do not integrate with other products well at all)... they advertise and design their products with the thought of fear of computers and tech. For people who do not buy into their fear then you can get much better and much more secure products for much less money... Their OS has a much shorter lifespan than most tech products...

There is also a very good reason that most any enterprise organization (of which I have worked for several from Blue Cross, to the DoD designing and creating software used in launching rockets, to county governments, to large banks) will have nothing to do with Apple.

My Astell&Kern portable has both high level AKM and top level ESS chipsets that allows for you to choose either. The unit is a few years old now, however I have compared and on this device I like the AKM a whole lot better than the ESS chipset.

My T+A DAC has an in-house built DSD decoding system. It is quite amazing, and since I use HQPlayer as my playback engine and up-convert everything to DSD512/48; it is a beautiful combination.

If I look at my Iphone, there is one alternative: an android based system. If one company does not respect my pricacy it is Google. If I look for a new bench for instance, I suddenly got spammed with all marketing of benches.

The Apple support for my Iphone is 5 years. After that apps will work for a while. As far I know there is no other phone that gives updates longer then 5 year. This long support was actually the reason I started with Apple.

I have no first hand experience with Lenovo tablets. Lenovo was originally an IBM brand but it is now a Chinese owned company. I have always heard decent things about them, but I would say it probably depends on which model you are looking at. If it is using Chromebook OS or an Atom processor then I would advise against it. If it is using Windows and an Intel or AMD processor then it is probably decent. I do feel that there are some solid alternatives to Microsoft, but I also know that Microsoft Surface products are definitely above par.

Thanks Randy, since my only real use will be for streaming navigation I'm guessing processor demands would be minimal ?
