StillPoint Ultra 5's

I'm also trying to figure out what they are supposed to do... diffusion, absorption in certain frequencies? The video Peter took made it sound like they are bass traps which would be mind boggling if true.
How's the sound chez Madfloyd these days? I am reading nothing but good things!

Same with me ???????????????

madfloyd have you posted any pics of your system in the members system section as of yet? Would enjoy seeing some pics - you have some awesome gear

Allen,

They worked in low and high volumes the same.
For me that's one big advantage.
Normal panels are adjusted to work for high dB and when you lowered the volume level the
Panels tend to suck some part of the music. That does not happen with the stillpoints acoustics
Panels.

The panels have 4 layers inside that I can't discuss right now but is like having all the different
panels available in one package.

And when you use the Ultra 5 your speakers will be totally (FOR REAL) isolated from the room.
You will hear more depth, dimmensionality.
Like taking a towel off the speakers

That's very interesting indeed because in my designated room this was one thing I noticed and most don't.

I don't know if it was already asked and apologize if it was but has any list been provided yet.

These panels sound like a supplement, not a substitute for proper bass trapping in the corners behind the speakers. I also use diffusion via primitive root diffusers both in the center between the speakers and behind the seating position. Diffusion breaks up "primary" reflections w/o damping the room like bass traps. I think a combination of both is necessary with the idea of smoothing out (flattening) the room's overall frequency response. It is easy to over damp a room with traps and make it a bit dead sounding. Using diffusers like this new Nordost solution or a more conventional style diffuser can smooth the room response without making it dead sounding. This has been my experience, anyway.

Great description, Nelson, thank you! I'm intrigued...

Your welcome , Allen.

I found out that using the LPI on the sources and amps makes another good improvement.
Stillpoints are the real deal !!!

Interesting read about these panels, below is what John had to say;

Without digressing into marketing-speak... We researched acousticians(sp?) and found a very accomplished fellow residing in the Minneapolis area. After discussing what we wanted to accomplish, he designed the panel for which we bought and refined the design. Refinements were necessary because we have to ship to humid climates. The design incorporates 5 separate technologies in each panel (22” x 22” x 3”). None of the technologies uses exotic materials.

Marketing-speak on: "Akin to focusing the lens of a camera, sound images ‘appear’ more focused, more dimensional, and life-sized. Fine detail, emotional transfer, dynamic swings are heightened while providing a deeper intelligible sound stage that transports the listener to the recording’s venue, essentially taking the room’s sound out of the equation. In addition to the exquisite listening experience, Stillpoints acoustic panels can be tailored to your personal tastes with dye sublimation printing. Permanent, rich, vivid color transfers can be pressed onto the outer screen fabric thus personalizing each panel with an image that is sure to please the most discerning aesthetic."

I should add the following about my personal experience at home so far. I had 8 panels in my "L" shaped, basement listening room (36x18x7.5); 4 spread across the wall behind the speakers, 2 each at first reflection points on the side walls. That end of the room was gone. A stunning improvement. This weekend I will be experimenting with just 4 panels. I'll report back next week on results.

Sweet, Nelson! The feedback on them seems to be very consistent - hard to believe but hard to resist once you try them!:P

I can only add that if you are not going to buy don't try them. Will make your life miserable knowing that your system sound so good with them , Hahahahaha
:)

Paul, you should start with them , they are very good
I prefer the Scout II than the classic
You can upgrade it to a super scoutmaster and the classic is a more difficult to upgrade

I don't know the Ultra 5's but so true, so true on the SS'. You are never the same once you hear the difference they make to your system!:P
