Prior to my audio life I had a '77 911 turbo (black on cork Euro model....FAST), an 87' 911 Carrera (steel blue/white) and a '97 911 Carerra (bl/bl), then I opened my audio store and now I ride a bicycle:)

Hi Jock...Happy New Year. I agree that there are several aspects that you CAN compare ie, the "toe tappin" experience. Also just the overall feeling that a speaker just sounds "right" to you, no matter what it is. It might be totally incorrect in audiophile talked about areas and it might not measure well, BUT if you can sit and get totally sucked into the music and forget about the speakers and what's driving them all together, then imho, that's a speaker that works. There is also the overall aesthetic appeal of a speaker that either works for someone or doesnt'......could go on and on, point being, that yes you CAN compare the S5's and the D3's in several of the mentioned areas.
 
Some very good posts in this thread. I also agree that every speaker is a compromise. You need to find which compromise best suits your tastes/needs.

These are a loaner pair that is sent out for auditioning. They were purchased in the spring/summer of last year (hence the older binding posts) so I'm assuming they've got plenty of hours. I am also told they have been played plenty.

And even though I know they really are not comparable, I compare them all the time:)....it's fun. Would love for you to visit if/when in the city! Michael, thx, nothing like that was taken, I was just purging my thoughts after my experiences. We are pretty much on the same frequency:)

Thanks Michael - I agree with you that they are an "older" set based on the binding posts as well as the crating - the newer ones aren't bolted down the same way anymore (at least mine weren't).

The reason I asked about the break-in hours is (as I'm sure you know) the S5s are only considered about 85% broken in when they have a solid 1000 hours of play time on them (and I don't think any "polite" volume levels count). :D

Wow 1000 hrs of playing at "impolite" levels! I thought I was almost done with ~600 hrs (over almost one year). Is this officially recommended?

OK, OK, I will try to reach 1000 hrs sooner .:blush: I have similar observation on female vocal, but yes overall the S5 is the best sounding speakers I ever have in my room. The bass drive and definition are simply amazing, and integrates seamlessly with the mid-range. Listening fatigue has been non-existent or minimal. This must be one of my most satisfying purchases.:)
 
I'm afraid Charles is right. I've had quite a few experiences with Magico speakers, demoing a number of pairs several times. Anyone who reaches a conclusion about a pair of Magicos that haven't been played for many, many hours is probably doing them a disservice.

And I'm also afraid that's true for Raidho and other speakers.

This is not to say, of course, that anyone who doesn't like the Magico sound will suddenly change his mind when hearing a pair that is well broken-in. There's no perfect speaker, as Michael has already noted, so we each have to chose a speaker with design compromises that best fit our personal preferences.
