Roon Endpoint DACs

For those using a computer based server and going directly into their DAC's network input........is anyone going to heroic lengths to isolate and improve your network chain. ie. audiophile switch/router, linear PSU, converting network cable to fiber and back to network etc?

I am wanting to get away from USB and the myriad USB cleaner uppers, but it looks like the same plague has descended on network connections.

Have you tried using a different connection other than USB and see if you can tell a difference?

For example, have you tried keeping the server in another room and connecting your Roon Endpoint via Wi-Fi? (Doing so bypasses all your physical connections).

I went from a wireless core on a laptop to a ethernet connection to my network. I was surprised at the improvement in SQ.

I felt the same way, which is one of the reasons why I switched from my Mac Mini setup with all kinds of bits and baubles attached to it, to my Aurender. I haven't look back.

How are you using Roon with your Aurender? I am under the impression that Aurender is not a Roon Endpoint.

Same experience when switching from Aurender/ USB to Roon Core on NAS/ Ethernet into Nyquist.

I had a special NAS 4-PIN power cable made to power my NAS directly from from a HD Plex LPSU. The power supply is fed with a Shunyata power cord.

Huge difference.

no heroics, just a high-ish quality CAT5 cable i installed for a 50' run. other than that, i try to keep the signal path as short and simple as possible. the results are fine but i am sure some tweaking would help.

Defining what is and isn't a Roon endpoint or DAC is not a accurate science. If you go to the Roon website you will see Roon tested DAC's, Roon Ready Networks Players etc. W hat you will not see are DAC's or endpoints that work perfectly with Roon with minor exceptions such a Meridian. Meridian has several units that function as endpoints or DAC's but the are not "approved" because they do not conform to Roon standards. Connect them to your network via ethernet and they will be seen by Roon and work for the most part. (You can't control the volume of Meridian and non Meridian units simultaneously that are grouped on your network).

This is a Roon endpoint DAC. I thought the definition would be quite straight forward. Automatically recognized by the Roon Player as an endpoint, connected to the Core and being fed through Ethernet:

And so is the Aurender Mini, and the Devialet Phantom, etc. etc.

Like I indicated, yes and no. Here is a link to the Roon page. When I owned the Meridian 808v6 it showed up just like your Brinkmann device but it did not use RAAT.

We stream to Meridian devices using the older Sooloos network streaming protocol (which the Roon developers developed).

and

On that page, manufacturers of RoonReady network players are listed.

With Meridian it is the other way around: given its pedigree, Roon supports the Meridian streaming protocol, in the same way SqueezeBox, Airplay and Sonos are supported.

Meridian is listed as supplier of Roon tested DACs.

All Roon endpoints are listed on Roon Labs’ website.

Some Roon Endpoints have a DAC, but not all.

I could still connect a Roon Endpoint to a DAC (like the Aurender that is not Roon ‘compliant’) but Roon’s screen would show the name of the Roon Endpoint, not the Aurender.

It sounds from what you wrote that in addition to the devices listed on Roon's website, older Meridian devices are supported as well. So you are right, the list of recognized Roon Endpoints is a big larger (but not much larger). Recognized Roon Endpoints will show up on at the right corner of Roon just as Kuoppis pointed out.

My new Roon Endpoint is the Oppo 205. (The 205 will replace my Logitech Squeezebox Touch as a Roon Endpoint). By the way, the DAC in the Oppo 205 is excellent.

PS. Roon can take your CD quality content (44.1 mhz) and send upsampled audio signals (up to 192 mgz) to the Oppo. I have not tried that yet.

Question, with the Nucleus + , I assume you can add HQ Player to an internal SSD but how would this setup drive HQP for DS512 , no Cuda ? ( high end i7 would most likely handle it) just trying to get my arms around this should a T&A DSD DAC 8 somehow drop in my lap , or would it be just a whole lot better to build a system

The Nucleus is running Roon OS. I’m not sure it’s possible to install HQ Player on a Roon OS device.

Just wondering . So maybe a built server would handle all the duties of Roon and HQplayer

Roon Rock the very specialized OS that is on the Nucleus won't host HQPlayer. You can build a custom Window, Linux or macOS machine and have it do both duties, and allot people do that. They then put a light endpoint like the sMS-200 or microRendu capable of being an HQPlayer NAA at their stereo.

Does either of the Nucleus stream Tidal and such or does one need another device? If your Nuleus has a HD what options are there for getting your CD's onto it?

Good thread, but man, it's Greek to me :)
