Review: Harbeth Super HL5 Plus ....

I was looking at the CAF (Capital Audio Fest) Exhibitor's list coming up next weekend. Out of all the great speakers Fidelis AV has (Wilson, Zellaton among them) he's bringing the Harbeth's to show. Amazing speakers...

Gone but not forgotten .. Thanks for the review .. I will have to get a listen to the latest version as I have fond memories of my last pair of SHL5's .. How are the 40's sounding Joe?

I don't know :(

They are still on backorder. It could be another month or more......

Yes, both the 30.1 and 40.1 have the Radial2 driver and the HL5 Plus has it too now. With that driver and the updated crossover makes it the newSuper HL5 Plus version.

I wonder if the 40.1 LF driver is what Harbeth is calling the "RADIAL2™ drive unit" technology also?

Jaxwired had the original SHL5. I mentioned elsewhere, the super-tweeter puts me off a bit.

It's just such an anomaly these days. Is it bright at all? I'll see if I can get him to weigh-in as well.

Definitely NOT bright. I found the SHL5 to be one of the smoothest speakers I've owned. I think that's why they are so popular, laid back but still detailed enough. Full warm bass, just a bit loose, but in a pleasant way. As far as I could tell the super tweeter did nothing. I never heard it really. At least I can guarantee it does not call attention to itself. They are excellent speakers, but more for music lovers than gear lovers IMO.

Sounds like my type of speaker - need to listen to them sometime soon!

Wonder how the Devore Orangutang 0/96 fits in this equation. They have peaked my interest along with the Offrande Supreme's more than the Harbeth's

Chris

My plan all along has been to buy the Offrande Supremes'. I owned the review sample of the Offrandes 10 years ago. I bought them through Antony Perrotta, but they were shipped directly from Fanfare who was the distributor before Bob Neill. Even though I sold them for a profit, it was a mistake. The constantly glowing review or the Orang's has made me pause about my decision to buy the Offrandes' at the end of this year without hearing the Devore's first. . I guess I need to try and communicate with Bob and Art who have owned and heard all of the likely candidates. I have tube amps on hand for any of them.

I would think Harbeth speakers need some power to wake them up as opposed to the others that could be fine with lower watts.

Paul

I have the tube amps in house to handle both. The MR RM-10 puts out 35 wpc and the Granite Audio mono-blocks will do 60wpc in ultra-linear mode or 30 wpc in triode mode with KT-88, 6550 or EL-34's.
