On the 12th Day of Christmas my true love gave to me...

Ian,

Congrats on what certainly appears to be a great selection! I've voiced various Magicos, but have no experience with these, except for the discussions we've all read. Can't wait to hear more from you as time goes by!

Best,

Jim

Thanks, Jim. I'm guessing you noticed that the speakers are in the same vicinity as where you voiced my Sashas a couple years back. :)

Ian,

I see the speakers are now spiked, did you or your dealer do the positioning?

Dan, I just placed the speakers where I had my S5's (masking tape on the carpet to guide me). No 'voicing' has been done. I only spiked them so that they wouldn't be so high off the ground (it not only affects the tweeter but the bass). I don't see how one could voice speakers with them on casters so it will be interesting once it becomes time to do that.

I so much prefer the feet on the M-series and S3 to what they did with the S5s! So much easier to level. I'm sure they were thinking the S5 looked cleaner with the feet hidden but....

You're right. At first I was a little taken back (that the feet had changed) but now I'm very happy about it. They were easy to level.

Thanks for posting those sweet pics Ian. Seriously drool worthy. As I looked at all the pictures of your M Projects, the word that kept coming to mind is, "flawless". THAT is what a SOTA speaker looks like. Can't wait to hear them.

One of the things I love about the design of the M Project is where they placed the midrange driver. This will help elevate vocals which is something I focus on when evaluating speakers. Are vocals at the proper height? Singers don't sing from their knees or sitting on the floor.

Well, that's the difference between Magico's brilliant designs and the wanna be's.

Mike, this is one of the reasons I wanted larger speakers. With the S5's the singers' voices would be hovering around my amps until I raised the volume up to, say, 85 db or so. With the M's it is about 2 feet higher at low volume. Definitely a taller soundstage.

Hi Ian,

I was never a huge Magico fan but these speakers are one of the most beautifully designed that I've ever seen. And I bet they sound even better than they look. Magico has hit a home run with this design. I am rethinking my position. Please continue to post your impressions of the sound as they break in.

Best,
Ken

Thanks, Ken. It's now been 4 days (closing in on 100 hours) and I'm starting to hear some changes (mid-bass & midrange starting to blossom a bit) but I can also tell they need more time.

Ian, your system setup is the mirror opposite of mine. My left S5 is 3 feet from the wall, while the right S5 opens into the kitchen/dining room. At first I was a little concerned that this would give me unbalanced sound, but it turns out that isn't an issue. Sitting in the center the sound appears to be equal from each speaker. To be honest, this seems to be even better after getting the left cross-over fixed. Now both speakers appear seamless and equal. While I would love to have the M series, I need to stay with the S5s for another year or two. My thinking now is to replace the wimpy stock spikes with some Mapleshade brass spikes, which will elevate the mid-range a couple of inches. I suspect this will improve the sound, at least for me. I prefer the mid-range at ear level versus the tweeter.

I think there was the slightest difference in tonal balance between the two speakers (I tested it on my Alexias and S5's and heard it both times but less on the S5's - probably due to the sealed cabinet?) but not enough to bother me.

It's a modern design I would never get tired of looking at. The gorgeous curved front. The beautiful carbon fiber. Hell, even the drivers are sexy looking. Just brilliant. Can't wait to hear them.

I too hate listening to The Lilliputian State Orchestra (that drove me insane with the W/P). Loved line sources for just that reason until the S5s. Though it seems that I get much better image height with my S5s than Ian does for some reason.

The last time I had to deal with the LSO was when I owned a Premier MMT tonearm. All heads were attached to the top of my amp that was sitting on the floor.

+1. Very interested to get some feedback on this. Many thanks.

I can say that the tweeter looks to be the exact same height as that of the S5. The higher midrange could be responsible for the really "big" sound. The imaging and soundstag seemed very natural and realistic in size and scale.

Hi Ian - any updates? I keep coming back to this thread. [emoji41]

You put your finger on the vast majority of what we hear as the Wilson sound. There was always a Lilliput sound even with the Sashas in my room. The stage was large but images within were shrunken - just more calculus for the brain to do to suspend disbelief. The Maxx2's did NOT have that problem so maybe there is something to having a midrange driver higher up. Even the Alexia's suffer from this somewhat. Be curious to hear Ian's comments on the Alexia vs. M Project in this regard.

Yes one always felt you were listening from the balcony. Especially say when moving from Magnepans to W/P for a review and then using for a review project for low powered and single-ended amps.

It is mainly the problem with gross anomalies in the time domain (That is what happens when you "design" speakers with your ears only). Moving the drivers back and forth for “optimum placement” makes thing worse.
You get a false sense of “space”, but it is an artifact due to phase irregularities. It gets old fast, when you realize it is there no matter what you play.
