Before and after photos of cleaning up the face on this 1935 Supreme Type 85 tube tester:
1) blow with compresses air to get any loose dirt off (rubbing dirty finishes will simply put deep scratches in it);
2) gently wipe with a waterless wash solution. They are designed with high lubricity to help lift dirt away from the surface and minimize the chances of scratching;
3) wipe with a alcohol-based paint prep spray to help get loose grease and oils off the faceplate. This takes several applications but be careful not to remove the silkscreened lettering;
4) gently apply 3-5 times a medium polish to help get more grime off and start to minimize scratches. Must do several applications of light pressure vs one application with a stronger compound as will damage the lettering. Also apply to all switches and buttons;
5) take knobs off to polish under them, apply polish to the knobs, and clean/lubricate pots as needed;
6) Move to several applications of a fine polish to help remove remaining scratches and grime;
7) apply a super fine polish to help ensure gloss on the finish;
8) buff, buff again, and buff again to ensure all the polish is off. Normally would use a paint prep spray to ensure this however they do not work well as a final step on these types of faceplates;
9) apply a ceramic coating to all surfaces and wait 24 hours;
10) apply a pure carnauba wax.
I have yet to apply the ceramic or wax in these photos and have about 4 hours into it so far.
