New Magico Speakers

thanks- im not a Vac guy anymore, either. I found the Phi 200 to sound like SS. For tube, id like to hear EAR 890 on them.

The VAC phi200's for me were the undefeated champ on the Raidho D3's. But as for Magico, VAC was excellent, but Vitus Class A was heavenly....and so it should be for the price.

I would imagine my XS amps would be right there with them....or better. ;)

I spent Friday afternoon listening to the M project at Magico headquarters. Equipment was Pacific Microsonics DAC, Vitus Preamp, Constellation 200 watt per channel monoblocks (speakers efficiency is 91db).

As a very happy Q5 owner (running with 800 watts of Devialet amplification), i was very interested to hear these speakers. The Q7's are just too big for me. The M project is much closer to the dimensions of the Q5. Taller, but width depth comparable to the Q5. I spent a few hours listening and was seriously impressed. The balance and clarity was intoxicating. Very refined upper frequencies that felt almost planar like, yet mated with the unflappable low frequency depth and clarity 3 10" Magico drivers can provide. Tracks that plunged the lower registers (Emmylou - Deeper Well, RR Copland - Fanfare/Common Man) were exemplary and reference quality, beating out the Q5's in a very noticeable way. I think if you're dreaming of a Q7 with a lower footprint, you'll find it in the M. In fact, I'd go so far as to say, the upper registers might beat out the Q7. I'ts going to be interesting to see how the M drives the design strategy of future models. The future is looking awfully bright for Magico.

Sorry no specs. :(

I don't mean to continue to overload the Magico thread, but thought this might be useful to Allen and you.

Myles....It is great to hear that you will be able to review this. I am a good friend of Sunny and am also awaiting his creation as I chatted on and off with him on this server, his design goals, etc. and feel they are spot on. While I am not sure what exact specifications Allen or you are looking for, I do know that he spent a great amount of focus in bringing about a multimedia engine that provides a top-level audio and video experience for a reasonable price. This focus was holistic in that he focused on hardware, software, OS-level, power, and any other portion of the solution to provide a deterministic and guaranteed quality of service (think QoS in the telephony world). I also know that he supports the typical audio/video standards of 16/44.1, 24/48, 24.96, 24/192, 24/384, 2XDSD, 4XDSD, etc. uses optimized Intel Xeons (modern Haswell), ECC RAM, and an over engineered ecosystem (busses, power, etc.).

From my last email exchange on the generic subject of specs he said (ripped from his mail):

"To appreciate the specs it’s essential to realize that it is a fundamentally different format, like Nascar and Formula one. While it uses completely different and superior parts from personal computers (which 99% of music servers are based on) its not about its scientific computing parts such as ECC ram and Xeon processors. Its about its approach and architecture that provides a certain level of service. (A concept they will discuss and introduce in upcoming reviews) think of it this way, a Fordf150 truck and a Freightliner both have 360hp and 6cyl engines. However, the ford’s performance will change and deteriorate to that of a moped with load, the tractor-trailer on the other hand has a guaranteed level of service up to 60,000 pounds. So its approach that tells the real story. Load is also the biggest enemy of audio in computers, as proven by all the extreme steps folks take to minimize it. A ‘tractor-trailer’ approach would seem like the simple solution, but it comes with its own larger problems. So they have come up with a new hybrid format. A three-way hybrid: a scientific platform converted to passive audiophile computer- battery operated- and one that does all multimedia. That’s like retaining the features of Ferrari, Tesla and Freightliner. If we were to use a low-tech example, think of a macpro miraculously condensed to a macbook, passive cooled, battery powered, and used in a multimedia powerhouse capacity. Those three elements are incompatible with each other, even as far as Apple is concerned."

I hope this helps.

Thx for the info, Anthony. I guess I was trying to understand his inputs (NAS support [via DLNA or other?], USB drives, etc), his outputs (physical connections, what formats over those connections), , as well as any processing that is done (everything upsampled? user controlled? converted to PCM? converted to DSD?, etc).

I'll reach out to Sunil of Care Audio who was demo'ing the Mainframe with Sunny. I can probably see the unit and ask Sunil any questions, too. It does sound interesting..

thx again!

yeah....i d buy them blind too them m-projects :)

actually canceled my virtual order of the s5 and waiting now for the one model down of the upcoming serie.
dreaming about the unseen thing, lol

The M Project is a one-off speaker, u-sound, so you might be waiting for awhile :) I personally asked Alon about this at a recent audio gathering.

My guess is the new tweeter will find its way into the Q series replacements, which presumably come next. (1/3/5)

World debut in Milan.

The new M-series. Look at the third photo down. You can see the carbon fiber sides. Not sure but think Mark Jones has his in house.

Has anyone heard any feedback from that debut?

I wonder if Overture will do something similar if/when they get a pair.

Very cool! New tweeter I understand. And the purpose of the carbon fiber is?

So they don't weigh a million pounds!

It will be rigid, light, and very cool looking.

And maybe a little less machining? I also have to think there's a sonic/speaker resonance advantage to the use of carbon fiber. After all, Alon designs everything using CAD and that is also used to predict cabinet issues. Very powerful software.
