New Kronos Turntable - Sparta 0.5

Go for it, Adam! I LOVE mine!:audiophile:

You've got one? Nice. I've been looking at this TT and I really like it. It blows the VPI HRS away in the looks department and at that price point, blows Clear Audio away too.

I have the original Sparta, not the newer 0.5. Deadly quiet and pitch perfect. Looks cool and sounds great. Do agree the 0.5 is more attractive tho.

Well, it's shipping next month... We should have one in the store soon enough!

Would love to hear feedback on .5 versus original. Mike can your friend a/b with the original?

Already done. Remove the bottom belt, you have a 0.5. By adding the bottom table (counter rotating table), you gain a bigger, deeper soundstage and sharper imaging. It's a nice improvement. That being said, the 0.5 is a great entry into the Kronos family and offers an upgrade path for improved sonics which gets the user much closer to the Limited.

Hmmmm... I doubt the Original Sparta's damping and isolation, etc. are optimized to run without the second belt. One would hope these factors would be more optimized in the .5 as a single belt design. I still would like to hear opinions on a true a/b if anyone has a chance to comment.

True the 0.5 should sound a little different than a 1.0 with the belt removed. They should be very close, removing the belt will give a good idea of how it sounds.

What a great idea

The modular upgrade path is VERY clever. Has anyone tried a Kronos on an isolation platform? How does one confirm the rotational speed of the lower platter to know if it is precisely the same as the upper platter?

Louis, the designer, has mentioned that further isolation (such as a vibraplane) would not be beneficial but I can't remember the specifics.

As for the platter speed, each platter's speed is sampled and corrected many times a second and there is a digital readout for each. If they were out of sync the two values would not be the same. It does take a little time for them to sync up (initially) when changing speeds (or turning on the table) and you can see this in the digital display (very neat!).

I currently have a Kronos Pro sitting on a Vibraplane and feel it sounds better than off. I think the results depend on your floor.

I've seen the digital speed display on the top model, but I did not see it on the Sparta 1.0 in the upgrade photo above. I should have specified the model to which I was referring. Show us some photos, madfloyd. You must be very excited and thrilled with the new table. Congratulations.

Welcome to the forum PAL, thank you for joining.

I have found this to also be the case with my SME 30/12. In fact, it improved further when I preloaded the Vibraplane with a 136 lbs. steel ballast plate large enough to accommodate the motor controller also. The Vibraplane is more effective when loaded close to its max. design load of 275 lbs. It seems the controller also benefits from the isolation. I think the suspension towers of the Kronos and SME are similar in concept.

I guess the only way to know for sure is to try it. After all, even the $100K TechDAS AF1, which has built in air isolation and the option of a custom HRS isolation platform, benefits from an additional active isolation device. Perhaps results are somewhat dependent upon the type of flooring and overall environment.

On the more affordable table the speed is not measured precisely like the LTD (or current Pro model). The Sparta's two platters rotate at very close to the same speed but not perfect like the big boy.
