My visit with Sarasota Audiophile Society President, Jeff Cantor

Jeff is a great guy with a really nice setup. He often hosts the meets for the Sarasota Audiophile Society at his house. Plus he's really into the music - I never see him without getting a new list of must have CDs.

I'm surprised Mike didn't mention the acoustical cork used as a wall covering throughout the space....

Yes, he has "Canadian made" acoustical cork. His room is good despite the glass and openings.

What is beauty?

Tape measures everywhere? And then after calculations with a multiplier in hundredths, we round off?

On this methodology, we'll just have to agree to disagree.

This argument or polite disagreement reminds me of an difference of opinion plastic surgeons used to have (or still have). Some say beauty can be achieved by creating specific physical dimensions between eyes, chin, and nose. Other say it must be done by eye.

To Metaphacts: Bill. We all admire and respect you. I have no preconcieved notions about speaker set ups. I plan to do mine in a few weeks when I can get an able body person to assist me. But I have a question. If there was such thing as a perfect room, would your set up by "ear" result in a mathmatical formula similar to what Mike is describing. Put another way: After you perform your art, if an architectural firm decided to describe the result, would the result have "83" in its description?

Definitely agree to disagree. I use the 83% as a basis point - nothing more. The final number is rarely 83%, but its "close"....and never 47%! :)

Bill - my method is always by ear to achieve the final result. Has to be. Always. But I have to have some basic idea - some guide. If the final number is 78% - fine. If the number is 88% - fine. But I can tell you, 47% was not right. But, he was very happy with the sound and didn't want it changed. Fine by me. I was just offering some friendly advice. :)

I'm a big believer in Jim Smith's methodology. That being said, Bill is definitely very skilled in this and we have discussed speaker setup strategy and methodology a bit. I highly respect his approach. It's a little more "by ear" then I like to use, but his results speak for themselves.

But I would be very surprised if he ever arrived at a 47% ratio during a setup. Then again, Bill doesn't use a tape measure, so he may not actually know (or care!). :)

Mike

who cares

If I was him I wouldn't care because he gets it right no matter what the ratio is. I was just wondering. No more than pure wonder.

...

Jeff uses the Oppo 83SE as his sole source.

Jeff is strictly a "digital" man, no TT?

I think I met Jeff before at another audio forum; a very nice guy who loves to discuss, and is quite elaborate too, which is totally my bag, sometimes, most of the time, often. :)

- Hope one of you guys invited him to join us here; if not let me know because I will.

He's not really into vinyl anymore he told me. All digital. That's ok. It works for him.

I invited him to AS (and he has told all the members about AS)....he will hopefully drop by and say hello.

by ear is my method-but everyone has different ears-so many variables in every set up.....

Cool Mike that you already did, 'cause I was going to.

Jeff has been poking around and sent me this email today: "Interesting forum. Nice people, unlike some of the other forums."

I couldn't agree more! :)
