My New Lumin

Kenneth Lau PSU upgrade....just got mine this afternoon and my initial thoughts are very positive indeed. so much more analogue sounding right out of the box.for those that are interested i will get back in a day or so after letting it warm up a little..right now i am very positive about the purchase....

Every time I hear someone say Upgrade A makes everything more analog sounding, I want to jump off a high building.

Keep us posted please. Also, what was/is the lead time from order date on his PSs?

Perhaps it is becoming a bit of a cliche, but we are in a digital renascence period where the weaknesses of digital are being understood and corrected. With the end result being "more analog" in sound, from better source files, better file players, and better DACs.

Personally, I find it amusing this is occurring at the same time vinyl is undergoing its 'revival'. Basically, it means there will soon be a lot of people P. O. that they spent a ton of money on a technology that is more hassle than it is worth. :)

Apologies for my ignorance....What's a Lumin? Is it going to depreciate my ClearAudio GoldFinger Statement No. 8495?

Ahhhh, I found it. Media Player with Wolfson WM8741 DAC. Nice chassis. No USB out? Is there a new model coming out & is that why there is a buzz here? I could be interested....

I was considering Aurender awhile back when they were still deciding on getting their subsequent product positioning right before the W20 came out...

Mike...What is Ken's "Ultimate" Version? It looks like some sort of beaut linear power supply? Could I use this for my CAPS project? If so, is there a 240v version without enough punch?

I remember when I upgraded the power supply to my turntable. The result was so much more analog sounding.

(wait - before you jump, can I have your preamp or turntable? :))

Steve - your GoldFinger (SN: 8495) is safe! :) The Lumin is a network music player (think of it as one box solution producing the smoothest digital). As Mark (MDP) says, "music just flows from it." Here is my review of the Lumin: http://audioshark.org/dac-reviews-93/lumin-review-3787.html#.UwX9mnddWxM

There are many other reviews out on the internet as well.

I liked the product so much, that I negotiated a group buy directly with Lumin for Audioshark members. I do not make a penny on any Lumin sold. PM me for details.

There is lots of discussion on WHY the Lumin is better than the old "Mac and DAC" setup. Network music players like Linn and Naim have been proving the "streamers sound better" concept for a long time. The Lumin just takes it all to a whole new level, while also offering DSD capabilities never seen before in any previous network music player.

There is some setup required. You will want a Synology or QNAP NAS, an ethernet connection to the NAS and from router to the Lumin. You need wifi in your house (same network as the router) and an ipad.

Ken's Ultimate Version is simply a separate power supply for the Lumin. Ken is not affiliated with Lumin in any way - but he has building separate PSU's for the Lumin for 8 months now.

Mike,

Did you try this with your Lumin ethernet setup? I hear it makes an audible improvement.

GISO GB (Lan isolator from Germany)

"The GISO GB worked beautifully, just as Mike G’s loaner one did. Much blacker background and better resolution when it sits on the Ethernet path from my switch to my NAS. Weird but true."

Details:

thank you very much for your mail and your interest in our GISO. Nice to hear your good results. I think we are talking about the GB version? The price for that is 293,- EUR plus 15,- EUR shipping, thus all in all 308,- EUR. Paypal accepted.

Winson,

You need to ask psme, but as I remember ethernet port of the Lumin is already isolated with transformer(built-in).

Thanks Mike...The Lumin specs look slick!! I must consider this against my current WIP. I already have a commissioned Synology 1513+ fully loaded with 4TB Seagate Constellations, a structured network with smart switching that I pulled from a data centre. CAT6 in wall & Molex 6a patch leads ready to go for this sort of thing. WiFi & iPads too. :D

Been working on a CAPS quiet PC (better than Zuma spec & with EM shielding). It just needs an SSD to get going & I was thinking of hanging this off the McIntosh MCD1100 USB port. But I've been dragging my feet on this project & not sure if I want to make it a permanent addition to the system.

Thought about Aurender for awhile but some of the feedback was disconcerting. A good CAPs build apparently gives Aurender a run for its money.

Now a black Lumin & those Wolfson DACs that do DSD have my attention.....

The time from order to aquisition is about 3 weeks.the build quality is 5-star.Ken also provides an upgraded umbilical cord that is silver plated OCC copper and said to be much better then the stock cord..i purposely did not install that last night but will tonight. as some members obviously don't like to read how i think the new PSU sounds i will limit my descriptions. does it sound better..?..yes it does..hope the building is not too high....
