Munich Show 2015

Unbreakable is good. [emoji6] Makes me think back to CES when I tried to turn up the volume on the Zellatons and people came flying from everywhere catapulting from every corner of the room. Imagine people leaping through the air yelling "noooooooo" as I reached for the volume knob. Glad to see the new drivers can handle some good old SPL's.

As to whether the drivers are truly unbreakable, Bud is standing by ready to give it the old College try.

All kidding aside, I would love to hear these.

Maybe they thought you were Bud! :)

Maybe they thought you were Bud! :)

The one thing you have to love about Bud is that he is honest. He doesn't pretend that his gear broke for no reason and he just doesn't understand why it happened. Plus, he takes the kidding in the nature it was intended. So yeah, Bud, booze, and Friday nights is bad mojo for his system sometimes! :)

BTW. Wizard or anybody else - Do you know any specifiction of these Zellatons Reference? I mean dimensions, weight, drivers size?

I think Bud's right that you have to be able to crank a system up. I normally listen upper 70s/low 80s, but last weekend put on a Billie Jean 12" single for a buddy and cranked it past 90db for fun. If one's system can't handle that, its not for me.

I'm attending the Munich show since 2004. Maybe I missed 2, max 3 of them and this was by far the biggest show ever: it was impossible to hear all systems in the 3 days I visited the show.

Compared to the previous years, I recognized that the quality of the presentations largely improved overall and it was mostly fun to listen to the systems.

Here some comments on what I (and my friends) heard on the show:

Magico Q7 with Soulution:
It was basically the same system they displayed also in the previous year. To be honest, I always found this system dead neutral but un-involving. Definitely not my cup of tea. The last time I heard Magico in Munich sounding really good was at the presentation of the then new Devialet back in 2010 (I guess it was with the V2 or V3) or when they paired the M5 with Soulution.

Magico S7 with Constellation:
Sorry, but I would call it a desaster (taking into account the price-tag): it sounded somewhat wrong and I heard the speaker instead of the music. I passed two times in the 3 days, but it did not change.

TAD CR 1 Mk II with TAD electronics:
I always liked the TAD, at shows and at dealer presentations. Also this year the presentation showed the strengts of this "compact" monitor: a huge and holografic soundstage with pinpoint imaging. Dispite the huge size of the room, the speaker was able to fill it adequately with music and just the right amount of bass. I also appreciated the sweet hights which never sounded harsh.

The Perfect 8 "The Point" with Ypsilon electronics:
This was one of my top 3 systems: a perfect soundstage, wide and deep paired with sharp and precise imaging, sweet hights and well articulated mids. I went back twice into the room to listen to this nearly perfect system. I'm sure that the fabulous Ypsilon electronics contributed well to this performance.

Tidal with Tidal electronics:
I forgot the name of the new Tidal diamond tweeter and diamond midrange spealers for 175.000 euro, but their sound was quite remarkable: they created a great, belivable soundstage, the sound was neutral and had good weight. Hearing one of our test tracks we palyed this year on the show (Audiomachine, Remix of "Blood and Stone") also showed good dynamics.

Goebel Highend Epoque Barforce with Analog Domain amplification and Total Dac:
I was impressed from the enormous soundstage depth and the seamless heights and mids produced by a bending wave speaker capable to cope with frequencies from 170 hz up to 30 khz! Even if the sound was maybe a bit lean in the bass, despite the huge additional tower subwoofer, for me it was another top contender for my personal best of show award. My friends partially heard some midrange colorations, I didn't.
Downside of the set-up the Total-Dacs output did not manage to produce sufficient output to push the system to more than 95 db... and we are talking about a >500 k system!

Gauder Akustik with AVM electronics:
The system was presented by a famous German Jazz music reviewer. I really liked the excellent Jazz music but it was impossible for me to judge correctly the system due to the very high levels played and the often less that good matering quality of the records.
I was onestly never impressed by overall feedback designs if paired with Accuton drivers. So, for me it was not really a surprise that I could not fully enjoy this presentation even if last year the same system sounded more convincing to me.

Gauder Akustik with Vitus electronics:
Knowing very well the speakers used in this system ;-), I was very eager to hear them with Vitus electronics (also last year Vitus and Gauder paired well). The speakers were biamped by a SIA-025 and a new stero power amp SS-025 fed by a SCD-025. It was a combination made in heaven: the sound was so liquid and smooth that we cound turn up the volume to insane levels without stressing our ears. With Audiomachines "Blood and Stone" peaks reached 111 db and teh system still sounded clean and powerful. Soundstage was deep , precise and realistically extended. The bass was powerful and deep.A perfect combination.... no wonder that Hans-Ole Vitus at home is listening to a Gauder Akustik Berlina RC9 as his friendly wife told us....

Audiophon, I understand this was just a pre-production example & that even the cabinet dimensions were different to what will come out in the production version. The S series speakers need up to 1000hrs to fully run in, and those S7's probably had less than 100hrs. And then there is the variable of show conditions, so I wouldn't rush to judgment :).

Backes&Müller BM35 active speakers at €75000.

Never heard it at the show, but it has been tested in the latest Stereoplay magazine.
At the same sound level as Gauder Berlina RC 11.

Perfect8 with Ypsilon and Bergmann sounded great, but sometimes the tweeter was a little "hot".

Bodhi, thanks for your clarification. Concerning the sound of the Q7 wih Soulution, I can understand that it is a matter of taste. They were not doing anything wrong in my ears, they're just not my cup of tea. The S7 was just sounding wrong and boxy and I can't understand Magico or the German importer to show an play (!) a pre-production model without clarifying that point.

Anyway, good to hear that this should not be the final version of the S7. I still love the old series with the V2, V3 amd M5 and the Q3 would be on my shortlist if I wanted to change my speakers.:)
