ModWright Oppo BDP-105

Not only Brent but also a bunch more. ...Ok, not necessarily here, from the AS members.

* Tommy, did you check post #10, from this very thread here? ...And there are other informative posts (with links), within the first five pages or so (very short thread here).

Hi Bob,

I researched everything I could find on the Internet about the Modwright OPPO 105/95/83SE/83 and even the Sony XA5400. I could hardly find any negative feedbacks.

But, I do like to be reassured by members who have had the unit for a while. Many units can sound impressive at first, but it's those special ones that people tend to hold on to.

I also like the fact that I can tailor the sound to my liking via tube rolling.

Tom, I researched extensively all Oppo players in the past, up to the 103D, 105D, and including the SS and tubed ModWright (premium tubes) and with separate power Supply (PS 9.1). ...The 95 and 105.

I don't think that I ever encountered less than 1% who truly weren't satisfied. And from that 1% they preferred much more expensive players, or ones that only play CDs, or CDs and SACDs, and Stereo only.

The Sony XA5400ES is another great player for the money, and that one too can be ModWrighted. ...But it ain't as versatile as the Oppo BDP-105D, of course. If interested in Sound quality only, and Modwright, it's a tough call between these two players. I myself would be inclined towards the Oppo but I read excellent comments as well from the ES Sony player.

I don't recall too many members here at AudioShark having first hand experience with them both and both ModWright versions; I think zero.

Just sharing what I know. :)

Are you a Stereo man only Tom? ..Or is multichannel also part of your audio agenda?

Headphone listening?

DAC? Can you use the fantastic features of the 105D, like USB asynchronous DAC, DSD direct (for direct streaming of hi-res audio)? ...Want to experiment with its preamp feature; you can do that too.

...There are few things to calculate here, and each individual calculates according to his own personal use (practical features) in tandem with sound/picture quality, of course.
Where can I go that nobody ever went before? ...

The higher we go up the audiofilia ladder the more distinctive we become, and personal impressions are even more personal. We build our opinion out of our convictions and experiences, and more or less it's a flexible opinion of our own entourage. And it's only one opinion; there are as many as the number of human beings living on Earth and the number of stars floating in the vast universe of our galaxies.

The best way is to use the electronics ourselves with our own rigs and at home; or if not possible we have to master the balancing art between all comments from the real users. ...An art that comes only with extensive and intelligent reading with the right questions (the room, the gear, ...of the reviewer, the owner). ...And time (experience, years), and trust, and reciprocity, synchronicity.
And there is never an absolute confirmation; it is the exact same with the woman we decided to marry. ...Without knowing all the other women we'll never know with total certitude, and not your friend, not your brother, not your father, no one. ...And better not tell your wife about it.

We make a choice, our own choice, we live with it, for a while, a short while, a much longer while, ...that's life.
Some people are comfortable with it, others are uncertain; that's life too.
Some people stay forever with the same components, others change them on almost a daily basis; some of us are poor, others in the middle, and some are rich, but we all have the same passion, music, sweet music that speaks to our soul. ...And in all ways possible and impossible. It's like a hard drug, heroin. ...And control. ...That balancing act in any addiction, in how far we want to go, and for how long. ...When to stop, and start enjoying the nice bouquet from the flowers. ...

Audio without people (all kind of people) is empty. ...It's the people, us, who decide where on our fridge we put that sticker (higher up, in the middle, on the side, in front, ...). ...And how long it takes till we replace those older stickers with newer ones. And during all that time we feel good because it's us and only us who decided to affix those stickers on our fridge; family pictures, magnets in shape of fruits, heroes, reminders, phone numbers, ...

Just one opinion, mine, among millions.

* The Oppo BDP-105D is a reference blu-ray player of exceptional value. The ModWright version was created to sound even better, like custom made sound for the music lovers. The tube version you can go for the top premium tubes, and according to many people that's the best sound from that player.
Jim, a person I made acquaintance with on another audio forum, said that he got rid of two players; one retailing for $18,000 (Wadia) and the other for $32,000 (Burmester), because he prefers the sound of the 105 tubed ModWright higher version with the premium tubes and the separate power supply, the PS 9.1 (about $4,500 all together if I recall, you can check ModWright's own website). ...That link (2nd one) is on post #10 as I enumerated just above.
But Jim is only one person; you have to make a fair assessment from many more people. And my own assessment at that time was something solid, only from several readings by owners. And I have no real experience with all the great music players out there, from this last year and this one.
I only have the 103, because I use the digital connection (HDMI) for both sound and picture. And I'm poor.

Who knows next year...; I'm in no rush to get there, I learned to be happy in the moment.
If we would spend more time to enjoy the present, we would be less inclined to pursue tomorrow.
After all it's the music, the emotional impact that counts; so yeah, give it a try, do a test drive with an Oppo 105 from ModWright. :) ...We should all be free of testing the car that we are attracted by, without committing, before signing a contract. Check if that's possible with the ModWright Oppo 105. ...I bet you already did.

Bob, thank you for your thoughtful input. I'm a 2-channel guy. I do enjoy concerts dvds/blu-rays and movies.

I've been searching for a dac for a while now. I did considered some 5-figure DAC/CD player to pair with a blu-ray transport. But, spdif limits blu-ray output to 48khz. That would be a waste for some beautifully sounding concert blu-rays. Hence I'm considering the Modwright OPPO.

I'm into musicality. I don't care for accuracy, resolution, or pinpoint imaging if I can't enjoy my music. I want to listen to all my CD collections, not just the audiophile ones.

I've used several digital sources including the Marantz SA8260, McIntosh MVP871, OPPO BDP95, Marantz UD9004.

As you said, at this level, there's no best, only what sounds best to you. It's all about personal preference.

Calling Modwright OPPO owners. Are you happy with your player? What have you used before?

Tom - I'm still just as thrilled with mine as I was when I first received it last April 2013 - over a year ago. It's hard to believe it's been that long already! I still feel that it is the strongest link in my system and I've enjoyed it more than any other source component I've owned. I honestly have no desire to upgrade it to anything else, even if I had the $$ to do so.

There is a lot of info from Modwright himself at Audiocircle ModWright Instruments (MWI)

From the people I know that have any of Dan Wrights equipment it works, its works great and sound great and he really stands behind his work.

That's another great link Chris, with several threads and players from ModWright; I forgot that one. It's because I don't frequent anymore...

Its got some interesting takes on things Bob, and I like to keep abreast of Vapor audio, AVA, Redwine and Modwright.

I would like to see some of them compared with other players from the caliber of the Trinity DAC and transport.

By the way Chris, you have both the 105 and the 5400; they aren't ModWrighted?
And which one are you using the most for music stereo CDs and SACDs?

If you had to keep only one, which one? :)

As mentioned above, I absolutely love my MW oppo 105d. It bests my McIntosh mvp881 by a fair margin. I have psvane treasure II tubes in the player and an emission labs rectifier tube in the power supply...a fantastic combination.

Thanks for the feedbacks guys. I'm close on pulling the trigger on Dan's demo 105D with Bybee rails and Pulse Gen ZX.

I understand the external power supply responds well to high end power cord. What about the power cord for the player? Since the onboard PS is responsible for the transport and main processing board, it should also benefit from a high quality power cord right?

I've never compared with stock but the wireworld silver going to the player and the external power supply sounds great.

This oppo fever is making me loose my sleep. After reading a lot of happy customers, I finally ordered one, 105d with all the extras. But won't be arriving until late this July. I'm going to need more Ativan to calm me down and sleep good at night. Can't stop thinking about it.

Jeff...I will follow your tube rolling experience. Never own a tube gear before. Excited to try one.

Shopping for a tube preamp too.
