ModWright Oppo BDP-105

Have any of you guys tried the headphone output of the Oppo? I know Dan does not alter the headphone out in any way. In my unit with higher impedance headphones (AKG K-601; 120 ohms), I hear a definite low level hiss. Also, as the player initializes for CD/ SACD playback I can hear low level crackling through the headphones. The hiss is constant and does not change with volume. With lower impedance headphones (Audio Technica ATH-AD900x) the hiss and crackling are unbearable. Many have alluded to the headphone outs of the Oppo being marginal at best, but I'm not sure if there is a problem with my headphone out. I guess my Oppo warranty is voided since I've had the unit modded. That being said, the sound via speakers is awesome!

I have not tried the headphone out on mine - I have used the LS100 headphone out which sounds fantastic! I will check on mine when I get home from work tonight and let you know.

Great. Looking forward to it....

OK, I plugged in my AKG K550s as soon as I got home - dead silent via the Oppo 105 headphone out. It's actually more quiet than the LS100 is, although the LS100 headphone out definitely does sound better!

I'm betting that the headphone out might have had an issue prior to the mod being done. You might contact ModWright and see if they have any suggestions or recommendations, and if they are willing to take a look at it for you if it is worth you shipping it to them.

Thanks for that, JJinID. There clearly is an issue with my headphone out, likely some sort of electrical interference. I guess I'll have to chat with Dan and see how to proceed. I really don't want to send the unit back...I've only just gotten it! Oppo is local to me in the Bay Area, but they probably wouldn't look at it... Will keep you posted...

Hi guys I am new here .
just got question for JJinID
I have oppo95 with tube modification and I listen through my hard disc drive.
The esata connection sounds better than USB connection. My question is oppo 105 doesn't have esata connection so it misses out ,so that means for digital music oppo 95 mod should be better than oppo105 mod
I think!Need your impression.I asked this question to Dan but he said he doesn't have much comparison with esata and USB connection .
i have done comparison on my modified oppo 95 and esata is better.please advise what would be the best way to play my downloaded (video-you tube ) and high res files in oppo 105 as I am thinking of replacing 95 with oppo 105.
thanks.

My two cents (and I own both the 95 and 105) - either get both or stick with the 95. Is there a reason for the switch?

Thanks
the reason for changing from oppo 95 to oppo 105 is just to improve upon sound .Bit dry and not as much contolled Punch in mid bass.!!!I haven't tried many sources out there and my oppo 95 very very very practical as I get to hear all digital music and my videos which I download from YouTube.
i don't know if I can improve upon the sound
may be
1-changing the source(keeping the practicality and price point of modified oppo95 in mind)
2-Changing my Pre which is Anthem AvR Mrx 700(tried bryston sp26---no luck, not clear, too much bass and boomy
3-tried connecting oppo95 directly to power amp bryston14bsst2(very very clean sound very well controlled but no dimension ,flat ,sound stage got small .
4.thinking of try Pre ARC 27!
5.Today a acoustic professional is coming to asses my room.
6.thinking of changing bryston 14sst2 to pass lab 305.5!
i can only make one move at this point of time because of my financial condition can't afford to loose too much money experimenting.
thanks guys .

It's not your source or amps IMO. Your preamp will only have some impact on "punch" and mid bass.

What speakers do you have? That's my guess for lacking punch and mid bass.

Welcome Jamshed and thanks for the question...

I would recommend keeping your MW Oppo 95 if you are happy with it! I do agree that the eSATA does sound slightly better than USB. What I would suggest for you is to look at upgrading your power supply from the PS 9.0 to the PS 9.9 via the ModWright factory. That will run you $500 to upgrade the power supply, and should get you very, very close to the sound of the MW 105.

I upgraded to the MW 105 because I wanted the digital inputs. The upgrade in sound is noticeable between the two components, which I wrote about earlier in this thread, but the differences are minimized when running the PS 9.9 with the MW 95. The MW 95 is a bit darker and smoother while the 105 is a bit more open and resolved.

Thanks

What tubes are you running with your MW 95? Changing out the stock tubes if you haven't already makes a very nice improvement! Another thought for you would be to upgrade your preamp to a ModWright LS100. I can personally attest that it works very well with and positively adds to the sound of the MW 95 and MW 105 players!

Thanks JJinID
that helps.
i have upgraded Sophia tubes.
I like open and resolved sound .
if it was not the esata issue I would have gone for oppo105.
with regards to ModWright Pre ,heard lot of good about it but my preference would be to try something in my system first .
So now I am going to look around for dealer in Melbourne to assist with that .
unforunarely its not a very prevailing culture in scene of high end in Melbourne .
thanks.

Hi Subdusted,

Welcome to the forum. I hope Jeff sees your question and answers.

Thanks. And one more question.. NOS Mullard tubes for the 95...what type of tubes are these exactly as there are millions of them. Thanks.

Hi Subdusted - welcome!

If I understand your question, the NOS Mullard tube type are 5AR4/GZ34 varieties. I am not a tube expert at all, so I asked Dan Wright to assist me with finding the correct upgraded tube for the PS 9.0. The other rectifier tube that I have heard good things about is the one from Create Audio (look earlier in this thread) and I will be comparing that one in my system in the near future.

so..that's for the external power supply? How about the tubes on the 95 itself? OK...I think I'll follow your advice and ask Dan...
Thanks.

If you go to Dan Wright's own website (blog), you'll find out that indeed the PS 9.0 (and 9.1) is the separate Power Supply.
And you can ask Dan directly any question you have regarding tubes and which ones sounds the warmest and most pleasurable to most audiophile customers.
...Or unless Dan is reading this here now.

Dan recommends the Sophia Electric 6SN7s as upgraded tubes for the 95/105, and I can attest that they are a significant upgrade over the EH tubes that come with the unit.
