Mike's system

here is the one you want, the 4 disc 45rpm Classic pressing. really fine sounding. "The Boxer" is revelatory. owned it since 1999. i started College in 69'-70', this was a fav of mine then and since, and so i had a very strong impression of how this should and might sound. the Classic 4-disc blew my mind. i finally heard how it should sound.

Simon And Garfunkel – Bridge Over Troubled Water (1999, 180 Gram, Vinyl) - Discogs

i'll have to drag it out again and listen for that piano crescendo. can't recall how 'clean' it is off the top of my head.

sorry to sidetrack this thread any further. Mike, have you compared the Classic 45 against the Mofi 45 rpm 1-step? I don't have the Classic, the only other 'audiophile' pressing I own is the well known CBS half speed.

The 1-step is quite good in my view. I also have a recent remastered 180g version, but the 1-step is another level.

What’s the difference between the DB9-S and the DB9-S 1.1?

A bit of an update….

My room was treated for the Avantgarde’s. While I had the MBL’s, I had intended to take down most, if not all the treatments and repair the drywall/paint as necessary since the glue from the Vicoustics can cause some minor drywall/paint damage when removing them.

With the Kharma’s, I’ve taken most of them down, except for about 16 panels scattered around the room and this weekend we did the drywall repairs and painting.

The NAIM system is the 300 system from the store. Still waiting on the 500 system I ordered in March.

Too much damping for the Kharmas?

Yes. The heavy room treatment was really meant for the horns. The MBL’s would have had none. Just a few for the Kharma’s.

Mike sorry to hear of the long delay for your Naim 500 system! Here's ours. Waiting for delivery of a record rack and then the cardboard boxes from the recent move will go. Also need time to get some art on the walls:

Hi Mike,

I meant to tell you yesterday but I got sidetracked. The room looks absolutely wonderful! You and your assistants did a terrific job. I bet the room has come to life with the changes.

Enjoy,
Ken

Thank God I didn't do that, The wife noted, have you actually read the interactions between the glue and the paint and drywall, I said nope, she said don't do it. So I didn't and boy am I glad. Damn Mike that looks like an expense wall "redo".

Nah…a few hundred bucks and a Saturday. Most of the hard work and drywall damage was from 18 months ago when I replaced the crappy in wall surround speakers with good (and bigger) B&W ones.

that's not too bad. So just spread some patch, smooth and paint ?

So there was too much junk on the walls? ;):)
Mike, playing devil's advocate, the $1,000,000 question
Were the acoustic changes made by ear or...? :safe:

By the way, the Kharmas look really good in the room.

Fair point! The treatments were for the horns. Now that they are gone, the treatments are not as prevalent.

I actually took down four at a time, used the clap test, walking around the room, while focusing mostly on the listening position and continued removing four at a time until the life came back in the room. Not very scientific, but I was maybe a little anxious to get the life back in the room or perhaps it was the whiskey acting that night. [emoji14]

I essentially did the same earlier this year. Ended up removing 18 sound absorption Vicoustics panels. My MBLs opened up in a big way. Also, I left the corner traps and minimal absorbing and reflecting panels.

The room was a bit too dark. Now, there’s a bit more life but yet not too much; a nice balance.

This is how I tune my room acoustics, drink whiskey and dance around clapping while using my laser measure to check how far I am about to fall.
