I love meters for sure - but these are pretty ugly in my opinion.

I think Vinnie Rosso hopped on that bad wagon with meters as well. And the TEAC amps with their retro-champagnes color meters I think look great. IMO when Rose put digital meter option on their large panel that helped bring the meter coolness to lower priced gear. And don't forget Advance Paris gear. NAD also hopped on that bandwagon.
But I think you could make a case for D'Agostino certainly having been the starter of this retro Trend. It's weird - sometimes I look at the D'Agostina meters and like them, and sometimes I don't

Uh, my vote goes to McIntosh. They are known world-wide for their blue meters.

There's a thread here something about vintage gear, I definitely feel that's the trend now. Even Onkyo some years back frought out separates with meters. Coda has a smart approach offering the metered amps or buy without them at a lesser price.

But what do these meters tell us? Nothing of significance to the music quality as far as I can see. They add cost, distract the listener and achieve nothing.
In days of old when we all had tape recorders, meters were essential as we needed to adjust the recording level to avoid distortion by over-loading the tape. Why does an amp need a VU meter? My amp has the option of a meter but I never choose this as the artwork and information of the album being played is of infinitely more use. Just my take!

While you may easily distracted, others appreciate them and are able to stay focused as needed.

There probably wouldn't be "Meter Mania" if it wasn't for McIntosh. Please tell me what other company is famous worldwide for having iconic blue meters for as many years as McIntosh.

McIntosh had meters way before this current meter mania struck. If these current meter mania trend setters had truly copied McIntosh it would be a better world to live in with unified BBM!!!! (BigBlueMeters) I wonder if McIntosh patented their iconic look? BBM for all would be a BBI as it would homogenize their look (BigBadIdea)

Isn't hi-fi only ever bought for one purpose - to reproduce music as accurately as possible? Obviously not, because many of us are happy to spend more on an attractive box than its innards. It's a human a vanity trait to spend money on "jewellery" items.
No problem with that - we don't want grotty galvanised steel or moulded plastic boxes on our equipment racks, but it's obvious that much of the hugely costly gear on the market has more invested in their enclosures than in their electronics. But many people are subconsciously happy spending big money on looks, although perhaps they don't question how much the boxes actually contribute to the total cost.
