I've insured mono amps this way before, and luckily not had to file a claim. Should he have bought 6k of insurance for each amp instead, and what proof of value would Fedex need to pay out the claim?

So when you ship/receive mono amps do you insure for the entire retail ammount or is it split 50/50?
fed ex will only pay to replace it so if I as a dealer ship I can only get paid for what I paid for the NEW amps. Used gear is an issue insuring and many will not cover it

when you ship expensive heavy stuff you need to ask the questions, I suggest in writing, and see wha the shipper and the insurance company say.
I have seperate rider for my business to cover however they only cover my cost not the sale amount.

We are way way beyond taking insurance from UPS or Fedex directly. We use external insurance carriers specializing in all shipping coverage for the millions in shipping we do a year. They also pay fast and don’t fight us….usually. LOL.

Any advice on specialized carriers for those selling used equipment, Mike?

Where are you supposed to buy if you have no local dealer(s)?
From a dealer who has a brand that they can ship to you and they cover the costs and assume the risks. These are the risks playing the used market game.

I have some personal experience with lost shipments. I shipped a $150,000 classical guitar of mine and found out on the day of delivery it went missing. I had double insurance: this shipper plus specific musical instrument coverage. Even with that, I was going crazy. We processed the claim and 30 full days after the delivery date, the guitar turned up undamaged in one of their warehouses. The shipping label had fallen off. It was a big box so I never lost hope that it would be found. Hopefully this is the case also for aI heavy item like an amp.

I have ordered gear from Mike. More to the point, it would be nice to be able to go to a dealer and check out piece prior to buying them.

I agree. Unfortunately audiophiles want it both ways - they want that local dealer to go check out and then they run home and order from another dealer to be shipped to save $50.

What we have today - a lack of dealers - was created by the actions of the very same people who lament it.

Any empathy I might have had for the guy just went up in smoke. :) I’ve heard some crappy sounding speakers but those are real stinkers.

To be fair, my real issue with Tektron is the nut job owner who threatened to sue a reviewer because the reviewer didn't care for his speakers and the fact many of the owners worship him. Just look at the posts from them. It's pretty eye opening.

Still wondering if anyone filed a claim, be it amps speakers or whatever comes in twos and boxed separately. Did you insure each for the aggregate value and were you compensated for the entire amount as if both were lost? Knock on wood, I haven't had this problem (yet).

Somehow this devolved into, "you should have bought it from a dealer" sorta answer. I buy vintage gear dealers don't touch, so that's a completely moot point. The other day I acquired a famous 40-yr old amp in a factory sealed box, an absolute unicorn! I haven't been more thrilled than with any recent new purchase I can think of.
