Magico S5 or Sonus Faber Strads ...

Joe, you've been on the road to nirvana for years! Me too! Let me know when you get here. It's a nice place! It's good to finally be satisfied. Make one last great decision. I'll be waiting for you. LOL

There is too much great new gear being released every year to achieve permanent audio nirvana. The best we can do is accept that fact and enjoy the acquisitions of others as they dip their feet in the water of new gear.

Re: S5's have landed at Rhapsody.....available for demo

I'm not convinced the Aida's are a better speaker than the Alexia's - BUT - I will agree, our rooms (which are similar dimensions) are not ideal. They need lots of space in all directions to breath. The Alexia's are "just right" in my room. How about yours?

I later found I would need 3-4 extra feet in the width of my room for the Aida's or some specific treatment, something I was not considering.

The Alexia are sounding great using my REF150. They are transmitting an energy to the individual music performers that I could not get with the Aida's. However, when operated with powerful amplifiers with great control, the Aida's could have a scale that approaches the XLF, bettering the Alexia. Perhaps the down firing subwoofer helps in this aspect. Also, although the tweeter of the Alexia is great, and a great improvement from the X2, the Aida's one was even more delicate an airy.

I regret I was not able to listen to the Aida's using the Gryphon Mephisto - but having overspent on the speakers I could not consider it. If it was not for my addiction to analog I could have considered four Devialets 240!

:woot:20.7's! The box is dead.........:woot:A five foot ribbon tweeter is like waking up next to the best looking woman you know & she smiles at you :satisfying:

Thanks Jim,

I am actually in a great place right now. I have a great mix of gear that is keeping me entertained. I am fortunate that I can change amps or speakers for a different flavor. I really think the Strads will be the icing on the cake.

I think the new gear being released now is more evolutionary than revolutionary. Buying shiny new toys is an addiction. A nice one, but still mainly an addiction. It's the music that I connect with late at night. Most of the time I can't even see the gear so as long as I enjoy what I hear, it's all good.

Get both Joe! :cryforjoy:

Kev

That is a great way to describe what you are hearing. I am truly happy for you. I'm going to ask Rayooo if I can come over and hear his 20.7's. I've always admired Magnapan speakers.

Joe, when it comes to speakers, I always go with my heart, my emotional connection to the music far outlasts the latest and greatest :woot:

Wise words Mark!

Maybe I can do the S3 for my head and Strads for my heart

Re: S5's have landed at Rhapsody.....available for demo

Hi Lloyd

I'll have to explain more when I can but I think the Magico speakers are more modern, for what that is worth. I got more of an emotional response to the music with the Strads. Sure the Magico resolve more and probably have tighter bass but I know with my gear (and better cables at some point) I am well on my way to nirvana with the Strads. Based on my love for the Evos and every time I heard the Strads, I was in awe, I think I have found the answer. I plan on hearing both again but the Strads sing to ME. They are like an instrument in sync with me.
Hi JOe...look forward to reading more about your thinking...but I already know from your post above where you are coming from. I will strong say if the Strads speak to your emotive side...and you have the CJs which have a lot of power, more than enough to control the SF Strads exceptionally well...then whatever bit of detail here or there you may/may not get from the 'modern' Magico...I suspect you may end up laying back in the couch, luxuriating in your Strad sound and saying 'I don't care'...it is kind of like Shindo. I think people who love Shindo rarely stray off, and also rarely keep upgrading over and over...because the particular balance of Shindo is done so well to suit their fans, that people stop itching to change things.
