Magico S5 or Sonus Faber Strads ...

Re: S5's have landed at Rhapsody.....available for demo

Hi Lloyd,

I guess it all comes down to finding what moves us. I am sure I am missing something with the Evos, but I don't care. I love what I hear.

Hi JOe...look forward to reading more about your thinking...but I already know from your post above where you are coming from. I will strong say if the Strads speak to your emotive side...and you have the CJs which have a lot of power, more than enough to control the SF Strads exceptionally well...then whatever bit of detail here or there you may/may not get from the 'modern' Magico...I suspect you may end up laying back in the couch, luxuriating in your Strad sound and saying 'I don't care'...it is kind of like Shindo. I think people who love Shindo rarely stray off, and also rarely keep upgrading over and over...because the particular balance of Shindo is done so well to suit their fans, that people stop itching to change things.

Joe, IF you love what you hear, isn't that what it is all about?
I have a strange bias, coming from a musician's standpoint, and that is....music has warmth!! YES, I know that is heresy amongst most a'philes, BUT personally I would much rather hear a system that makes beautiful music ( and we call it warm) than one that is totally accurate and yet is so analytical it comes across as less pleasant to listen to ( DOES THIS MAKE SENSE?). Loving what you hear is what it is all about, IMO.

Thats' Joe, one step warmth, two steps musical.

Joe, when it comes to speakers, I always go with my heart, my emotional connection to the music far outlasts the latest and greatest :woot:

Agree - follow your heart. Like when I met my wife and knew I couldn't live without her. I kept looking and hoping for the right sound til the constellation drove my S5s. Can't live without that pairing with ARC tubes on front end.

Couldn't agree more, you need to find what appeals you most. Analytical is not musical, and only your ears/heart can find what's right for YOU. Music is emotions, and overly analytical speakers don't have any emotions. Where to draw the line, only your ears and heart can answer that question, and you already did may I add.

Thanks Darrin.

Joe...sorry for the aside but Kev I just noticed the SGR speakers and amps have been replaced by Maggie 20.7s and Sanders Magtechs! When did this happen and why?

Not to derail this thread but I noticed this too and am curious. I love those big SGR's

Joe get em both!!!!

There are some that do & some that don't, I'm just listening!

Joe, are you able to listen prior to purchase to the Strads with your CJ amps? They're a pretty difficult load for tube amps.

"The drop-dead gorgeous Stradivari Homage is specified as having a very high 92dB voltage sensitivity; to Sonus Faber's credit, my estimated figure was even higher, at 93dB(B)/2.83V/m. However, the speaker asks the partnering amplifier for a lot of current capability, its impedance (fig.1) dropping to 3 ohms and below for much of the upper bass and midrange. And the combination of 4.4 ohms impedance magnitude and –48 capacitive phase angle at 55Hz will give lesser amplifiers conniptions."

In your speaker auditions I think you should also look at the ATC EL150P, they should work great with the CJ amps.

Hi Anatta

I think it will be impossible to hear my ART monos on the Strads. Thank you for pointing that out. I have to believe my amps are up to the challenge but this is interesting. The gentleman who bought my my Dartzeel had Strads and I listened to that combo. It was wonderful. I think if the Dartzeel can handle it, my CJ gear can. I need to do more investigation.

I heard them being pulled by an ARC VS110 in the past in a 25'X25' room with no apparent issues, I don't see why the Art Mono's would be an issue.

Joe, the ART monos won't even break a sweat. The meters on my 2301's rarely cracked 20 watts....and I listen way louder than you! I think the little JOB would be great too.

Hi, mike, I guess I've been out of touch but what happened to the raidho's?

That's what I am hoping. I heard them with the MC2301's and a Dartzeel 108 and loved every second on them.

I think so too.
