Magico S1 mk2's - 2 way magic

I understand why some want brutal transparency but there is so much good music that was recorded terribly that you just can't enjoy anymore. I'm so glad I finally gave in and went coloured, I quit listening to the speaker and started listening to the music again.

Just curious, what did you have before the Sabrina's?

I think it all comes back to the source. When you hear some A2D conversions, especially early ones, you want to run for the hills. Frankly, I don't have any albums that are as bad as some of my CD's from the 80's.

Jerry was over the other day and I had him compare a 1962 first pressing of Peter, Paul and Mary's debut album to the CD. The difference was night and day. The vinyl had body, detail, tonality, etc. The CD was just nasty.

There are hundreds of examples like this.

That being said, an album like Chris Jones' Roadhouses and Automobiles shows just how good the entire process can be - even on CD - when done properly.

Yea, that re-master was just nasty. There was no frequency response above 1k. The high hat sounded like they were hitting a pizza box. HORRIBLE. I do not believe I have ever heard any worse example of a re-make.

I had to make a tough decision between S1 and Guarneri Evo about 2 month ago.
They actually cost similar here.
I went for EVO for my small roombut am still thinking about S1 from time to time.

We were late to the party as we were assimilating the S7's and S5II into our environment and just now received our S1II's. After just a few days of break in, literally they stand sonically right up against either the S5II's or S7's. Of course the bass is not as extended, but I never sense that there is not enough bass and this is in a 700 sq. ft. room).

Besides the bass being totally suitable for probably 90% of music that one would play, there is something about the smaller cabinet (and the two way design) that makes the S1II image like a monitor vs. it's bigger siblings. The S1II's really are something....if you get a chance take a listen in a good set up, I think you will be surprised how good they are at this price point. Although saying that there are a lot of great sounding speakers at this price point now....good stuff.

Magico is hitting it on all strides. The new tweeter is awesome. One of the best on the market.

Update:

My TA speaker cables are breaking in nicely and now the S1 Mk2 soundstage is revealing itself. No small, "inexpensive" speaker should sound this good. I'm growing fond of the tweeter. While it doesn't have the shimmering detail and air of the Raidho ribbon, it does have a beautiful, saturated sound that plays nicely with the fat trebles my D'Ag's produce. The attack on percussive instruments is fast and the timbres are accurate. Easily a match for my front end. Great overall speaker and I'm happy to have the chance to get to know them while my M3's are under construction

Eric

After several weeks of listening and some room treatment upgrades from ASC, the verdict is in. These little S1's are the finest speaker I've owned regardless of price. The tweeter puts out high dynamic range, fully saturated, weighty trebles with all the detail you could ever need. I sit in my chair looking at these little, conservative looking boxes and marvel. The bass is sufficient in volume for my taste and tighter than a super model's butt. The soundstage is wide and deep. The additional tube traps I added to the room at the first side wall reflection points released the potential of the speaker.

Bottom line. I could easily live with these speakers. M3's will be a sensory overload. I'm all out of superlatives and adjectives for Magico products.

With the new S1's, BHK 300 monos, and my factory hot rod Blue Circle preamp (600,000 uF capacitance power supply), I am experiencing virtual reality audio for the first time. I often think how much my sixteen year old self would have approved [emoji846]

These are vey special speakers. I've heard them myself in about an hour listening session. I had them connected to my Pass INT-60 that I brought to the dealer to demo with. At first, I thought the amp wouldn't be enough especially in their fairly large room.

The Midrange on these speakers is special. I've heard the previous generation Magico S line as never felt it was engaging speaker to me.

I compared these to the Focal Sopra N2 during this session.
Hi, i would really like to hear what you think about the Focal Sopra No.2 and how are the differences ? maybe others have heard this 2 speakers and can also comment. Thanks in advance.

And mdp632, sorry , after reading the whole thread i did see that you actually answered my question already :-)

Looking forward to have an audition of s1 mk2. Looking for a sealed design speakers. Had heard ATC SCM40 and impressed with the neutrality and revealing sounds from scm40.

I am from Singapore, most of our houses are not big and can't afford to have a listening room. So speakers will be in living room.

Currently driving usher dancer mini 2 with ASI grand stereo and liveline preamp.

If your room isn't too big, and you are not listening very loud, then the S1 mk 2 is one of the best speakers you can buy.

They have no right to sound this good fresh out of the box. They sound as amazing as they did at CES. Some serious 2 way magic going on!!! I totally love these! Completely seamless. I really liked the S1's, but the MK2 is much better.

And I know they will only get better with break in.

I'm using the Devialet 400 (no SAM), Lumin U1, USB connection and Straightwire speaker cables! Nothing fancy and wow wow wow!!

Mike...just curious...why no SAM? If I remember correctly you've always been a big fan? Not playing nicely with the Magico? Perhaps no established profile yet in the Devialet software? You have me wondering...

Last time I checked, there was no profile for S1 mk2.

Man I miss my S1 mk2's. I wonder where they went? Hmmmm....he said I have to give him M3's to get my S1 mk2's back. Now that's saying something! [emoji6]
