Magico M7 announced?

Disappointing. I was hoping for a floor-standing M1. Something more affordable to get me into Magico M-Club.

Interesting. I predicted an M7 would be released and wasn't far wrong. Based on its design and driver compliment, the M6 appears to be the successor to the M Pro, not a replacement for the discontinued Q5 (hence the M6 model designation).

This new model also includes several design innovations incl: a more rounded edgeless design (reminiscent of the Thiel CS3.7), carbon monocoque chassis without the complex cross-bracing of the M3, use of a carbon fiber midrange enclosure, higher quality integrated tripod support which supports the curved cabinet shape & more refined tweeter. It should do for future speaker development what the M Pro did in 2014. I like it!

Wow, that base must have been much larger than guessed. That's a lot of speaker sitting on three feet. Curious if its lighter than the Q5. I wander in raw material form if Carbon Fiber is more expansive than aluminum.

It should be lighter than the Q5 as the M6 uses a monocoque enclosure with 1/2" thick carbon fiber walls which Magico sais has the highest strength to weight ratio in their product history. The term they used was "unparalleled". In their promo video you can clearly see (much to Elberoth's chagrine) that other than the horizontal copper connecting rods, Magico were able to eschew the M3's comprehensive cross-bracing due to the new cabinet's superior structural rigidity.

Re: the relative cost of the carbon fiber cabinet. I recall Alon saying that Magico would continue to use extruded aluminium side panels for the S series for the foreseeable future due to it's lower cost vs carbon fiber of the M series. Though with economies of scale as more speakers get produced in carbon fiber, that cost should start to come down.

Is the M3 lighter than the Q3 was? That will give you a clue as to the weight of the M6 vs Q5.
No. The M3 weighs 145kg, whilst the Q3 weighs 113kg. Bare in mind if Magico's promo video is accurate, and the higher strength to weight ratio of the new 1/2" thick carbon cabinet has allowed them to eschew the M3's comprehensive cross-bracing; weight should come down dramatically in theory. Hence the tripod support would be more than sufficient.

When I first saw the M6 I thought of the Thiel CS3.7 too, the aesthetically challanged round aluminum dome which was derided by many critics was functional ( Thiel was ahead of his time).

Curious why its the M6 and not M5. Maybe the M6 will play louder and deeper than the Q5, hence, not a replacement but a tweener between Q5 and Q7. Thinking of someone who wants the ultimate fidelity the Q7mk2 offers in a smaller, better WAF, and more living room friendly package.

Thank you to all for answering the weight question. I still cannot get over how all that mass is sitting on such a "relative" small tri stand. It has to be substantially lighter than the Q5. The M6 may be just as different from the M3 production wise, as the S line.

What gets me is the $172K price. The M3 may soon approach $90K according to a friend who just visited a dealer. This does not bode well for the price of a future M1 or M2. The M line looks to be more than twice the price of the S line.

The M6 fit and finish look exemplary as expected in a Magico speaker. The interior with its cone shaped mid enclosure and lack of internal bracing should make construction/assembly much easier. I'm looking forward to reading the reports from Munich.

Exactly my thought Peter, well said. I yawned once I saw 172k.

Because there already was Magico M5:

They should have called it V5 - it would make perfect sense then and now.

Got it. Thank you , I remember those M5s. The Q5 was the replacement and were actually cheaper than the M5 I believe.

There was also an M6 that predates the M5. It had a cylindrical all-aluminum cabinet. It was a massive hunk of metal and available around the time of the V series and Mini.

The press release answers my question regarding weight.

Driver complement: Tweeter: 1.10" Diamond-Coated Beryllium Dome (x1); Midrange: 6” XG Nanographene Cone (x1); Bass: 10.5” XG Nanographene Cone (x3)
Measurements: Sensitivity: 91dB Impedance: 4 ohms; Frequency Response: 22Hz – 50 kHz; Minimum Recommended power: 30 Watts
Dimensions: 57”H x 26”D x 20”/15”W (143 cm x 66 cm x 51/38cm)
Weight: 390lbs (177Kg)
Suggested US Retail Price: $ 172,000/pair
Ship date: 3rd Quarter 2017

Not only lighter also smaller, again per the PR.

"Similar to the external shell of an F-35 fighter jet, this method of construction increases the structural strength-to-weight ratio by a factor of 60, while reducing overall weight by 50% and yielding outer dimensions that are 30% smaller without compromising internal volume. The curved interior and exterior walls minimize internal standing waves and eliminate external diffractions."

Sigh..the dream for M2 lives on [emoji19]

M6 is gorgeous although its price is not. How many will actually be able to own those, despite impressive new tech?
