Magico A5’s Arrive!!!!

Not surprised! I now use my A3's with a Naim 552/500 system, and I have zero feeling or experience that I am under-serving my system with "only A3's." I've now listened to them at home with Naim 252/300, 552/300, and 552/500, and each time they are 'hanging in there' and delivering. Takes the speaker upgrade pressure off that's for sure!

I’m just the opposite. I’m feeling the upgrade pressure to an extent.

While the A3s are absolutely wonderful, from what I understand the A5s: (1) have a better soundstage - better resolved; (2) the midrange is more refined with better resolution/details; and (3) the bass is better, tighter and cleaner than the A3s. If so that’s substantial.

Am I missing something? Honestly I don’t know, but it would be wonderful to experience a set of A5s at length until I make my final speaker selection. But I can’t justify the 6 month or so rental fee. :roflmao:

So much equipment; so little time.

I'm sure the A5's are "more" speaker. I'm just glad that when I listen to the A3's I'm not overcome with 'must upgrade'

You know what your secret sauce is, don’t you?

NAIM!!!!

552/500 system. I’m jealous! You should see the mishmash of NAIM I have at home. LOL. I’m using a SN3 as a pre into a 250DR with a HI-Cap and the entry level NAIM streamer.

I would love 500DR/552/555.

After watching Mikes porn videos of the A5s my interest has been juiced for these speakers. My main concern is my room size. The ceiling is 8' and the width is 11' and the front wall to my seat is about 17' and then opens to a dining room behind it. I use two small powered sealed subs which I feel give me weight and body to instruments in my current soundstage. I just wonder if the A5 with the power of the Diablo would overpower my listening area. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't need any subs with the A5s.

Nope, we play them in our 14 x 18 with EASE.

Do you sit the 'short way?' How far from the speakers is the 'sweet spot?'

I've found that, in our living room, more than just the dimensions of the speakers goes into whether they appear 'too imposing' for the space.

The height and width of our A3's is essentially exactly the same as the Devore X. The Devores are about 5 inches deeper. The X's seemed super imposing in our room, where the A3's absolutely do not.

The room is 13 x 18 and we sit the "short" way, 9 feet from the speakers on my laser when I sit at the sweet spot.

Which is why I cant tell whether the S3MkII would seem too much, absent dragging them into my room :)

Re: Magico A5’s Arrive!!!!

I saw this video (*) and the question (rhetorical) that comes to my mind is: did you used the same camera?
If so the Magico smashes the competition.
So powerful and clean! :shocking:

I'm playing Mike's YouTube demo tracks on my M3's now. Nice choices in repertoire. Have a look also at Joseph Tawadros, his recent album with the SSO has been featured on ABC Classic FM this past week, caused me to go out and buy some CD's to spin on my Grandioso.

Darrell - I’ll go in tomorrow and listen longer, but first impressions: if Magico made an S4, this would be it. It has such weight and bass weight. Mids and highs are fabulous. Gotta say, for a $20k ish speaker, this will set a whole new benchmark in performance. Maybe a little too good.

Mike,
The tweeter in A and S series are different, from what i have experienced (comparing A3 to S3MK II and S1MK II) the sound in S series is much more airy, refined and i would say luxuries
Since A5 use the same tweeter as A3, I cannot see how A5 compared with S_MK II (yes on the button A5 will have more slam than S1MK II & S3MK II) but as a whole package I would still prefer S3MK II over A5 any day.

Please read post #55 where Mike says, "I’ll give the tweeter advantage to the S3 Mk2."

However, Peter Mackay of Magico states:

Thank you for your message and inquiry regarding the sound performance of the new A5 in comparison to the original S3.

We are pleased to report without hesitation that the performance level of the new A5 will easily surpass the original S3 loudspeakers. The advancements made at Magico over the past 2-3 years with transducer, enclosure and crossover designs are vast and have raised the bar significantly since the release of the S3.

Uh huh.

The new A5's look nice. Anyone know if they will work with a low powered tube amp? I have a friend who is speaker shopping in their price range, he uses a 45 watt/ch tube amp ( not sure of the make) and he will not go ss. We tried his amp on a pair of Wilson Alexia's last week, it was anemic sounding. Funny thing is the amp sounds terrific on his current speakers, a pair of TAD's.

I'll refresh your memory:

not surprised it sounded anemic as the alexia is a pig to drive.
