Lumin P-1 arrives tomorrow

I do also use 2 cascaded Meraki Switches with Startech.com SFP modules and fiber connection in between. The first switch is connected to the router via ethernet and an galvanic network isolator and connects all other devices of my living room. By using the fiber connection to the second switch in the listening room, I keep my audio setup isolated from any RF-noise from the router or the first switch.

When I used the P1, I connected it via a short fiber cable to the second switch which was easy to do and costwise 2 good SFPs + a good fiber vable does not cost more than a decent Ethernet cable.

I also found that at the beginning the P1 sounded a bit harsh and digital. The unit considerably improved over the following weeks and the digital harshness completely disappeard.

Hi Peter , i am using Ifi Power X to power the TP link...which also made a good difference.

Yes, that's par for the course for components. Digital components, in particular, can take a couple hundred hours or more to burn-in. A Fidata server I did a review on last year needed a minimum 500 hours.

Same applies to most cables, as well. Plus cables need time to settle, even if burned in, if they've been moved or re-positioned, or worse yet, shipped on a logistics truck.

The local Lumin importer mailed me that, according to them, burn-in is more than 200 hours for the P1. From my personal experience this seems quite realisctic.

Exactly the opposite.
Tried two different SFP transceivers; Finistar and gtek both with Corning glass. One day decided to try Ethernet and just noticed more presence, 3D, sparkle and detail and just overall more ease to the system. Each time I switch to fiber the system sounds choked now with just Ethernet. Shrug.

It was mentioned that adding a ether regen might help but it’s just another power cord, power socket and possibly another LPS that I dont have at the moment. I love tweaks but I do like less in the chain.

I’ll revisit again and ping more folks offline and not derail this thread.

John Atkinson has reviewed the P1 in the latest issue of Stereophile.

I fully agree with his review - also concerning the AES-connection vs. network (in my review I connected my TAD D1000 MKII via AES to Lumin).

A new firmware is released for Lumin P1 - it is now possible to change to digital or analog input (using the Lumin IR remote) even if the network cable is disconnected (with "Network Error" displayed if not in input mode).
 
What else was in the firmware? My X1 got updated to 14.6.

In addition to the P1-specific enhancement above, default FLAC radio stations are updated, along with the latest Spotify Connect SDK.
 
I found the review from Stereophile not very flattering. It appears that there is a disconnect in performance judgment between a professional reviewer and actual users? Most other input I have read is very positive!

Well, we love our P1. It sounds superb with MSB amps, Hegel, Luxman, Boulder, etc., everything we’ve tried. I love the look of it despite what others say. It doesn’t get lost in the rack, it stands out beautifully and bold. The sound is smooth and musical. Love it.

I have a question. How does HDMI work on P1? AppleTV or other devices can connect to P1 with HDMI and P1’s HDMI OUT goes to TV? Basically acting as a pre-pro for 2 front channels.

Actually 2 questions. Does it come in black?

Yes, I found it difficult to pull quotes from for our review page, but then they did award it the highest Class A in their Recommended Components list in the same issue, pointing to the review as evidence.
Having read a few reviews from John Atkinson, I think that's just his style to be honest.
 
I missed that Class A rating! Thanks. I'm in the market for a new DAC and my head is spinning. May post a thread to get some help!

I find it really interesting as my experience is very different , BUT i use Cisco SFP Tranceivers can that be why ?
