...to a couple of the Bravo! Vail concert series shows.

Here's a little info about the Bravo! concert series:

https://bravovail.org/about-us
"For the Love of Music in the Mountains

Hailed as one of the Top 10 "Can't Miss" Classical Musical Festivals in the US by NPR (npr.com), Bravo! Vail is the only Festival in North America to host three world-renowned symphony orchestras in a single season. For six weeks every summer, internationally acclaimed soloists join the New York Philharmonic, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra featured in programs of the great classics, plus jazz and pops. Stellar chamber music artists, including members of all three resident orchestras, come together with musicians from our Young Professionals-in-Residence Program in an eclectic chamber music series."

CALENDAR:

As a happy birthday to me gift, I just purchased great seats for these two performances in early July:

Dallas Symphony Orchestra
POULENC: Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra in D Minor
BERLIOZ: Symphonie fantastique

The Philadelphia Orchestra
BERNSTEIN: Candide Overture
HIGDON: Violin Concerto
DVOŘÁK: Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, Op. 95, From the New World

In addition, we've earmarked the calendar for about five more free shows around the Valley which include mostly small quartets playing in various pavilions in different adjacent towns.

Looking forward to all of the performances!

Thanks Mike. It was a little happy birthday to me effort due to my birthday falling in between shows. LOL.

Mike, sounds great. We're hearing the Philadelphia O with their new music direct Yannic Nezet-Seguin next Saturday, June 6, here in London. Different program from yours - Beethoven Piano Concerto 3 with Manny Ax, and the Tchaikovsky Symphony 5, one of the great war horses which was a specialty of the long time Philadelphia O music director Eugene Ormandy. We hear the Philharmonia two days before in the same hall, so it will be nice to compare.

Have a great time.

Larry

Mike, that's awesome! Hearing classical on vinyl is great, but nothing beats the real thing! We have a subscription to the NY Philharmonic this year and have resubscribed to a smaller subscription next year. Heard some great memorable programs. (But who knows what's going to happen to the NY Phil as the music director is stepping down and no replacement in sight. :dunno:)

Enjoy your performances, Mike!:audiophile:

Thanks Larry and Allen. We're excited to hear these pieces of music and in a beautiful setting too.

That looks like an amazing place to hear music. What a great evening.

It is Bruce, and it was! Just got back from the show.

It was a spectacular presentation of Symphonie Fantastique!

Jaap van Zweden threw in a nice encore of Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries too.

Always impressive, the Dallas Symphony played their hearts out tonight.

What a great piece and nice coincidence. Our last night in London (June 28th) we heard the Symphonie Fantastique with the LSO. What an amazing piece to hear live. Beats the hell out of a stereo! The scoring is quite fascinating - 4 harps, 2 sets of tympanis, 2 bass drums, in addition to a pretty full orchestra.

Interestingly Jaap van Zweden has recently taken over as music director of the Hong Kong Philharmonic. HK has been hiring European music directors of late - including Edo de Waart, another Dutchman, like van Zweden, but at the end of his career.

Interesting information Larry. Prior to the encore, van Zweden commented, "this is my last night...." and I don't recall if he said, or was referring to his last night in Vail as the final show with the Dallas here (before the Philadelphia Orchestra begins their shows) is a "Let's Dance" presentation led by Jeff Tyzik, or if he in fact was alluding to his last performance with the Dallas in general? Since we were 5th row, I could see his emotion and it appeared he was a bit broken up. Again, not sure if he was just thankful for the 5 minute standing ovation and grateful for the crowd/venue or if maybe he was saying goodbye????

I agree, hearing Symphonie Fantastique live is a special treat. Nothing like a symphony going off full-tilt! So amazing those massed strings in total sync.

Special indeed.

Just saw that they posted a little segment of the Dallas and March to the Scaffold:

Didn't realize it was outdoors! Sounds like a great performance. I checked wiki and the score says 2 harps. Don't know why the LSO was using 4 harps in the performance we heard.

Larry

Yes, open air (covered) reserved seating + lawn seating in the rear at the Vail Ford Amphitheater.

Ha! Most likely four Harps just because the LSO is AWESOME.....!

I would love to see (and hear) the LSO do this entire piece, I bet it was special.

The Dallas were no slouch and all movements of the Symphonie Fantastique were glorious. As fun as the March was this night, the Sabbath was the topper! Pure energy.

p.s. We went back this past Sunday for another show:

BERNSTEIN: Candide Overture
HIGDON: Violin Concerto
DVOŘÁK: Symphony No. 9 in E Minor,
Op. 95, From the New World

We really enjoyed the first and third pieces (Bernstein and Dvorak) which were most excellent. I love the Dvorak No.9 as it has real continuity to my ears. The Higdon on the other hand was difficult for both my wife and I....and long. Though Benjamin Beilman is a real talent, the musical path that this piece takes only showcased his technical ability and not so much his beauty IMO. Perhaps we are not educated enough with this type of score, but to both of us it seemed extremely disjointed, rough and non-melodic. Maybe we just prefer the more simple to follow scores?
