Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON

from the 1.8 release notes:

Audio stack improvements

The audio pipeline in the Roon Core has been optimized to reduce memory traffic and CPU usage. We have also improved the efficiency and mathematical accuracy of the dithering algorithm used for DSP.

maybe this accounts for the SQ improvements being reported here, and on the roon community site?

Now we have conflicting data from Roon apparently where some people are saying that Roon didn't do anything to affect SQ and now we have this statement from Roon.

Based on experience, I don't assume any software "upgrade" is going to improve SQ as sometimes the opposite happens and the SQ gets worse. I had to roll back a software upgrade for my DAC because it was my opinion the SQ changed for the worse. This is why I'm curious to see if a consensus emerges one way or the other before I update to 1.8.

Agreed. Everything affects everything in audio.

I replaced the Ethernet cable connecting the NAS to the router in the office, from where data is sent wirelessly to a router in the music room. Audible impact on music playback.

The changes doesn't necessary have to be strictly audio related to make an impact in the overall SQ - any changes to the software can effect sq - processing power, memory footprint, storage access, networking, anything...and you will hear them (better or worse) in a well optimized system.

Time after time it's proven that there is NO such thing call bit perfect playback!

That's great Ken. I own the Nucleus+ too so I am quite interested in what others are hearing or not hearing with the new upgrade.

One other thing is the imaging sounds a bit more forward in my listening room. Nothing dramatic but definitely noticeable.

So far, the only glitch that I have found is with the Focus feature. A couple of my Bookmarks were broken.

It looks to be a Boolean operator issue (with the “AND” / “OR” operators). It has already been brought up to the Roon Labs folks so I am confident that it will be addressed.

So far the update is a giant waste for me. The first response was there is no adjustment for the number of albums displayed. Now I have also found that I can no longer see the "abc" option at the bottom of the page to elect jumping to any letter in the alphabet to search for the artist I want to play. So far this sucks.

While I would prefer that they brought back the ABC option, I’ve found on my iPad that instead of just scrolling through the list of my albums, if I use the scroll bar itself it pops up the letter of where I am. For me it’s clearly a step back but it’s something.

No problems here updating the Core to Antipodes CX and the iPhone and iPad apps. Sound quality appears to be the same. I like the new interface.

I own the Roon Nucleus Plus. I’ve been listening to the Roon software update for several hours now and I would swear the vocals sound more holographic than before the update, really 3D. My system quite honestly sounds better than it ever has before. I would also be interested in learning what improvements Mike heard.

Ken

Finally got 1.8 to load on a different PC (Acer Lap Top versus Intel Nuc), and I also hear remarkably improved sound....Unless the Acer lap top is doing something to make the system sound more engaging ( which I doubt since there’s a lot of different apps, and loaded programs with all kinds of background noise going on with the Acer lap top, where as the Intel Nuc is just dedicated to run Roon), .....Anyway sounds terrific and Love the new interface....
Cheers....

10th february they will fix the setting issue

Checked, it’s fixed now

listened carefully last night and i seemed to notice a bump in SQ ...more detail, wider soundstage and more of that holographic goodness from my SET amp.

i do use roon DSP to upsample everything to DSD512 which is fairly compute intensive: with 1.8 roon signal path indicates a processing speed of 3.0x, before with 1.7 it was around 2.4x. so, from this metric roon has indeed improved processing efficiency.

but OTOH, could just be that the power company was sending better electrons to my house yesterday?

note: just to clear out the cobwebs, i did shut down and restart my transport which runs roon ROCK before listening to 1.8

On a side note, and I can't say I have experienced this since I don't own a Taiko Audio Extreme, many changes they are making to TAS, their proprietary audio software, is to improve sound quality. They are adding functionality as well but won't do it if it causes a decrease in sound quality.

Once upgraded, Roon will redo its audio analysis and this will affect sound quality.

It can be found working (or finished) here:

Glad that you're hearing some improvements.

Roon processing requirements is lite weight versus HQ Player. One reason I am thinking of comparing again with 1.8.

not a fan of the 1.8 purple color -- so, had to tinker around and build a theme around my favorite emacs color, firebrick:

Updated to roon 1.8...it does sound a bit better. Wider and more micro dynamic. However it's still edgy and fatiguing. The 1.8 interface is a disaster. Multiple menu presses to get to things that were immediately available in 1.7. Not to mention the color scheme....

Now the real reality. Taiko Audio TAS still is FAR, FAR superior. Some have said 1.8 closes the gap. Not from what I am hearing. If your primary source are files or streaming, the Taiko Extreme and TAS are a must listen.......

Randy, would you consider posting a protocol that describes how to use HQPlayer in conjunction with Roon?

It is baked into Roon actually. So on the server I have USB drivers for the T+A loaded and within HQPlayer I have it using these drivers. In Roon HQPlayer is available as a zoon that you can choose. I don't have this on my laptop that I am writing this so I cannot do screen shots at this time if it is needed.

If a more comprehensive is needed I can probably put together screen shots from my Surface.
