If You Owned Less Than 100 LPs, Would You Drop Over a $100K on a Turntable Set-up?

sheesh, my first 'high end' CD player was a magnavox-based kinergetics with only a 14 bit chip set, this was around '86/87. players based on Philips 16 bit chips didn't arrive til '87, by then everyone and their uncle were quick to come out with a proprietary player (all based on CDB-650 guts).

Steve,

You need to learn how to read.

My username is "jap" with a small j.

I'm not going to change it or disappear.

I still think you're a envious scumbag with a small "d". How's that for a personal attack. Such personal attacks are not called for. It's simple, if you don't like what you are reading, leave.

With the successful knee surgeries, he's playing golf again. At least recreationally. He's also a bit of a beast on the treadmill. That's how he lost all that weight.

I expect that his number of LPs will grow steadily. I'm happy for him.

Agree Jack ,

Plus who has more than 100 Lp's they can play anyway, i mean really how many LP's are at Sota level SQ , very few IMO...

Regards

Man, some of you guys are squeaky like fat witchedy grubs in rotten timbers. I don't even know the guy, but if I copped that sort of personal attack, I would withdraw from forum sharing life and tell you to go and f... Yourselves.

Now I understand why Jap can be an offensive word. Jap you should change your name or disappear.

Kudos to the Steve at WBF (which I am not a member of BTW) for his fine choice in analogue equipment and setup. Buy more vinyl. Buy more tape. for opening his home and his life to those that are interested in his choices.

+10,

I don't why jap was banned. They have more trolls than ever existed in Scandinavian folklore and other people they have given the boot to have been invited back to continue to run the forum in the ground. Can you imagine starting an audio forum where you wanted peace and tranquility to exist and then inviting Ethan Winer to come aboard as an "industry expert?" jap was mild in comparison.

This must be your version of the fox and the grapes .... :)

Your silly name calling is way over the top Steve, you're the one that needs to leave this forum.

Mike,

Why does this guy get to insult people like this?

It's your thread jap and you're steering the direction. Clang on the black kettle and close the thread if you will.

Inciting further responses from members is trolling. Jap, you're bad enough to be blocked, which I have done now. No soup for you!

Mike can close and delete this thread anytime he wants, but unlike you I haven't used any silly name calling.

BTW, I stand by all my posts on WBF.

So the good doctor, in his quest for audio nirvana, appears to have spent considerable time, effort, money, but is only now getting into analog/vinyl playback? I might consider advising his patients to get a second opinion. lol.

Hi Ken, Another forum to track, wish I could do this as a job! And a much easier forum to navigate than AA. Ken, I felt Ivan was watching every post I made, Who has 56000 posts?
Anyway, I will look at all speakers. I wouldn't be surprised if I end up with Focals. The Maestro or Utopias, not the Grand Utopias. I have never heard them, but I look at them as a speaker I usually like. I am stuck in the dark ages and can't move past the big woofer, big bass scenario. I understand that speed is most important, but no air, no bass, simple. I lived with the Dynaudio Temptations for 2.5 years and loved everything about them, except rock bass. Now the Dyn's were the beginning of a shift in design and the beginning of the big speaker small driver concept, and it certainly has improved a lot since, espiecally the Raidho's.
So Ken, lot of nothing said here other than absolutely will check out the Focals. Even the Magico's have 10 ,11 , 12 inch bass drivers, so I will listen to the Gauders and Raidho's again with better electronics and probably not make a decision on the speakers, but clearly will be listening to those Soulutions! I still have the Salons to play into which I love!
And, Everyone I talk to that I have had trust in has been a big Magico/Soulution proponent. I can only do one thing at a time too, as I said, this is gonna rip into my retirement and my sensibilities... $150,000.00 on audio, wow that is tough to swallow, I could pay off my house!

Keep you posted!

Thanks for the Welcome!
Tom

Steve Williams is a nice man. I'm pretty forum agnostic, I'd much rather learn or share than fight or prove a point. I'm glad he has discovered or re-discovered vinyl. The fun for me isn't buying the latest sonic wonder that everyone uses to make their system sing- yeah, those are fun, I'll play an audiophile record occasionally and even buy some. Where vinyl is a blast (for me) is buying box loads of old stuff- not crap, mind you, but older records made in the day when the whole production and engineering process was far simpler. Much of the music I've been listening to is not jazz or classical but pop/rock/psych/folk/blues from the late '60s and early '70s. Among these records- often gotten for less than 8 or 10 dollars, are wonderful masterings, and once cleaned, sound fantastic.
Part of the process is the discovery (or re-discovery) of the music. And, like web surfing, you hear an album with a particular sideman, and discover, hey, that guy had some band 40 years ago, wonder what that sounds like? It takes time, I guess, and I recycle the vinyl I don't want- give it away, or wholesale it to a dealer after I've gone through the process. The net result is that I'm learning more about the music and the musicians, as well as they people behind the scenes- producers, engineers, sidemen, mastering differences.
In some cases, the new remasterings are wonderful. But, in many cases, the old, ubiquitous pressings sound better. So, part of the process of discovery is buying a bunch of copies of the same record-- not necessarily expensive-- and comparing them. Sometimes, I'll keep several copies because each has strengths.
As to age, frankly, I didn't have time to do this when I was working a career full-tilt. So, it is a nice way to enjoy the rest of your life.
And, given how long people can live these days, the only issue is good health- physical and mental. May we all be so blessed.

Steve seems to be a pretty reasonable guy and he should be able to purchase whatever he desires without having to answer to anyone else. If audiophiles had to justify our purchases to the average consumer we would all be committed to a asylum.

You sure are right Garth. It's a beautiful system and there's no need. He can buy pink speakers if he wants - it's HIS money.

Oh, by the way, I remember spending a few thousand in 1979/1980 (a lot of money back then) on my first CD player - the first Sony - and I had, oh, 3 CD's!

must have been some exotic prototype since we (consumers) didn't have them available

Mike.......I suffer from CRS (can't remember $h!t) and I am beginning to think you do as well. There were no CD players in 1979 or 1980. Sony and Philips did not launch CD players until March 1983, although Sony did release the CDP-101 in Japan on October 1, 1982.

Yep, you're definitely showing signs of CRS.

Ok, answered for me. Yes I as well can relate to 'CRS'

Classic, now who's lowered himself !

Whats wrong with his room size ...? Myles would die for that much RE ... :)

Duhhhh, it's smaaaaall, but I think you knew that and were jesting ……….

Since this thread appears to be quite pointless at this stage and the name calling has begun, any objections to closing it?

Just remember, put it in your will so that when you die, your wife can never sell your gear for what you told her it cost.

I vote to close it since ithe thread started life as mean-spirited.

Maybe some just overlooked one of the forum rules ;
