Last night as a storm was blowing in I went out onto the deck to take in the breeze, light rain, moon, stars and night. Standing against the deck railing as I was looking up and out at the distant mountains, a fairly large owl flew right past me left to right....about 15 feet in front of me. I've seen owl's in other states (Montana) but always at a distance.

I have no idea what kind of owl it was, but the wing span was around 20-24".

We've got all kinds of wildlife visitors around here where we live and though I've heard owls before at night, I've never seen one around here in the day or dark.

It was neat to see another animal that I know live in these parts but elude us humans most of the time.

About 25 years ago we had an owl that lived in an apple tree near the driveway for a few years. He was always hooting.

He relocated when the tree fell on and crushed one of my friend's cars in a bad storm!

We've got owls in the wooded area in and around our neighborhood. We hear them daily (more at dusk and dawn, when I'm told they are more active). Every once in a while I'll see one. Very cool birds!

We have had a owl or two out behind the house. But mostly we see hawks. It is fun to watch all of the smaller birds at the bird feeder just off our deck, coming and going for the seed. When all of a sudden their tweeting stops and they all freeze, dead still. You know there is a hawk somewhere nearby.

Occasionally the hawk will swoop down and grab one then fly back up into the trees. Kind of scary, because they are pretty sizeable too, and you know they are in hunting mode.

Beautiful birds of prey the owls are for sure. We see lots of hawks and eagles around here, but the owl (which type I saw, I haven't a clue) has eluded me until the other night.

Neat! It could have been a Great Horned Owl, which can get rather large. I see those during the day more than any other Owl.

Owls are way cool (seriously)!! I've only seen one in my life not in captivity. Too bad we can't talk to them about things audio. They don't know about the different brands and such. When asked they just keep saying "Who"? At least we know their favorite rock band = The Who:P

A few months ago, I was standing in my backyard, and a large hawk swooped down from a tree right past my head and snatched a small field mouse! Then, a few weeks ago, I was riding my bicycle on a back road, and a large hawk flew right alongside me, right at eye level, for about 100 feet. I could hear and feel the air movement from his flapping wings! That was pretty cool!
