1TB Hi-Res Music Player System - HAPZ1ES Review | Sony Store U.S. - Sony US

Any updates on how this thing sounds?

Your best bet is still a proper PC-based media server, and connecting via USB (or USB->SPDIF) to the DAC of your choice. This gives you an open system with unlimited source potential; your only limit will be the DAC (which is easily replaced, whereas migrating from a closed-loop "player" can cost you either a ton of money or a ton of time).

Sorry for late response. No I haven't heard it yet and I don't think I will either.

All the members here guided me to another route. So now I'm focus on Bryston or EMM labs Dac. :)

Just remember the Bryston would be considered one of the lesser "closed" systems.

What does this mean?

On the other hand, comments from owners, and reviewers, consider the Bryston to be one of the best platforms for digital file playback.

Bryston is fine product, but if you are at all interested in DSD playback then Bryston is not your answer. It seems they are staying away from that format at this time.

I have been checking Amazon on just about a daily basis and it still shows up for pre-order only.

I did see that the lower cost and lower spec Sony HAPS1/S 500GB Hi-Res Music Player System is/was in stock.

Same here, Jim. Do you intend to purchase one?

I am considering purchasing one. It is the easiest way to get into DSD at a reasonable price with dedicated storage for any DSD downloads I may come across. If they don't start releasing new music in that format I have no intention is heavily investing.

Not sure which players will be demoed, but a local dealer is hosting a "Sony Hi-Res Holiday Audio Event" this week to introduce these players. They should be available very soon....

Sony Hi-Res Audio Event | Jenkintown, PA | Blog | HiFi House

I'm currently talking to this dealer about some gear and emailed them about this event. They weren't 100% sure which player will be brought in, maybe both. Sony seems very tight lipped for some reason. I told them I wouldn't be able to make the event due to work schedule and they said when they get the HAPZ1ES in he will lend it to me to audition at home. Sweet. If that happens, I'll report back.

I am, too. While I'm interested in the unit for its DSD capabilities, I'm also interested in its DSD re-mastering engine. The promise of less (or none!) digital glare from our CD collection?! That would be sweet!

I will never underestimate Sony when it comes to digital technology. They often loss lead on hardware to drive software revenue. I have a 5400es sacd player (ModWright mods) that wipes the floor with other digital front ends. And it was CHEAP. When Sony sells a flagship product in a space they care about, it is usually the cats meow at a fraction of the price other mfg can sell at given R&D and costs of scale. I would bet on Sony. Their 2k player will beat 10k players.

Smart man

I bought it from Amazon. They have a generous return policy. I will flesh it out for a few weeks and then decide whether to keep it or not. But they sure have put some effort into their new DSD products. The conversion of redbook to DSD has me really curious.

Doubly smart

I don't have any digital glare in my CD collection, just the occasional crappy CD.
