Did you ride today?

Congrats my friend! That is awesome!! Feels great when you hit one of your goals, doesn't it? Just inspires you to get out and ride even more!

I rode 30 yesterday and included a hill in the ride that had been taunting me for awhile. Felt good during and after.

Nice! Hills remind me of Rule #10:

Rule #10

It never gets easier, you just go faster.

As this famous quote by Greg LeMan tells us, training, climbing, and racing is hard. It stays hard. To put it another way, per Greg Henderson: “Training is like fighting with a gorilla. You don’t stop when you’re tired. You stop when the gorilla is tired.”

I've always liked that quote. Very fitting for climbing hills.

Haha, great quote, Doug!!

Awesome, Anthony! I did a somewhat hilly ride this past weekend myself. It was good punishment for my lazy a@@. :P

I finally got back on the bike today after almost two weeks off. I was chomping at the bit to get back out there. Had a good 27 mile ride through apple country. The trees are still loaded with them. I hope to get back out tomorrow for some more.

Sounds like a great ride, Doug! I always find I'm a little slower or can't get as longer if I had a two week vacation from cycling. Build up is very slow, but decline is very swift for me.:( Nice riding and hope you get back out there again today!

Allen, you are so right about the decline. It takes no time at all!

I did get out on Friday for another 25. I did some exploring on some roads never ridden and it was a nice time just cruising along.

I can't remember if it was this thread or another that we were talking about hydration but my views have changed since I was able to get out so much this summer. I tried a new drink mix called Skratch. It was developed by a nutritionist that worked with team Garmin. It's all natural and uses real fruit for flavoring. It's not sugary or sickly sweet like others I've tried. I bit more pricey but I don't use a lot. Apparently this guy realized that he finally got the formula right when the riders stopped complaining about it!

So anyway, I use one bottle of this and one bottle of just plain water on my rides now. I'm hydrated and feel really good afterwards instead of being a bit sluggish an ready for a nap!

Some epic rides are getting posted Congrats to all. It's been raining for a week. In all honestly it's kind of tough on the spirit. Suited up this morning for the normal Sunday ride a nice paced 60 miler in the country . Forecast called for no rain but started pouring . Relief is in sight.

Wow, last night I wrote this nifty post about my first ride in weeks, the wonders of autumn, and how nice it was to have finally found a day to squeeze in a ride. I guess I never hit the post button! Lets just say we're having a week of wonderful autumn sunshine here in the Seattle area, and I'm trying to sneak a ride in here and there. I think once this weather ends the door will be shut until spring!

Did I mention how much fun it is to learn, late into the process of prepping a house for sale, that lenders won't offer a mortgage on a home with less than 5 years remaining on the roof. Our home is 14 years old and the cedar shake roof had no more than another year in it. We were going to re-roof just before my wife was offered the new position in Portland. We thought we could negotiate the roof with a buyer, but nope! Now I have roofers banging away on the nice $30K roof I'm buying for the next owner. Damn magnanimous of me! That would translate into some serious upgrades to my system, or be a big chunk towards the music room remodel in the new house in Portland.

Oh well, it should help us get our asking price, and hopefully quickly.

Ride on, my brothers, ride on.

Doh! Well, you have a nice house to look forward to when it's all over. And if you do decide to retire when you get up to Portland, think of all the riding and listening you'll be able to do!!:exciting:

It's been dry up here in JerseyLand. My friend/neighbor took up cycling so he and I are riding buddies now. Nice to have company while putting in miles...

Doug, I saw this post earlier but forgot to reply back until I saw a Skratch ad today! I've been wondering about Skratch. Glad it works for you and you like it. I use to use Hammer Nutrition for my electrolyte drink, now I just bring two plain water bottles. I may try Skratch though as it does seem like a good product.

Thanks for the post and feedback!:peace:

We think that all of this scientifically engineered hydration/protein drink mix is so much better for us in aiding in recovery but it's amazing what plain old water can do. ;)

It's been raining here for days now. Look like it might be possible to get out this weekend. I agree with how nice it is to have someone to ride with. It will make you a stronger rider for sure just by having someone push you along...

Getting chilly out there nowadays. Mid-30s when I started, not sure what it was when I finished. Stupidly I did some hills, so hot and sweaty going up the hills, cold and chilly on the long declines. I'm just going to do some flat pace rides for the winter...

Ride on, gentlemen.

Allen, it's a tough time of the year to be conquering hills! These days you just have to put some miles in on the flats and be happy that you can get out there before it gets way too cold or there's too much snow to deal with. I'm hoping to get out tomorrow. Today was a nice sunny 55 degree day. Too bad the wind is gusting at about 50 miles per hour! I kid you not!!!

Warm here in Seattle area today too, turned out about 60°. But instead of sneaking in a ride I grabbed the paintbrush and touched up a few spots after a realtor was here showing our house.

I'm so looking forward to getting on my bike, even for winter miles. When I'm thinking 'bout riding but not able to, my mind conjures up the following image, and I think all is fine in the world.

I know there are some strong teams in the Portland area, hopefully I'll meet some folks who push me hard and keep me honest. Still longing to hear the words "damn, that old guy can really drop the hammer". And after my time trial event late this summer, I realize I can hammer reasonably well, but I've got some serious training to do so next summer I can "represent".

And hopefully, just maybe, there will be some cute riders in Portland. I swear, with the exception of my wife of course, Seattle, in general, has the frumpiest looking women in the country. If I have to suck the wheel of some younger, fitter jock, can it please be someone like in the photo?

Ride on my brothers, ride on!
