Did you ride today?

I've been using the Strava app on my phone to track my rides all summer. So far I've put in 773 miles with all but roughly 60 miles being done since June. I'm hoping to hit 1000 miles by the end of Sept. I really need to get a Garmin for my bike so that I can be more accurate since it will always be with me. I'm a lot closer to 1K because I didn't take my phone along early in the year. I may not be the fastest, strongest or go the farthest, but I'm out there doing it.

All you guys out there putting in miles in any and every type of weather, take a moment and give yourself a pat on the back. You deserve it!

Nice riding there Doug. Getting in miles is always a joy, some days more than others, but always good to be out moving taking a bite out of life! Where do you live?

And your comment on riding in any weather reminds me of one of the "rules": Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period. Fair-weather riding is a luxury reserved for Sunday afternoons and wide boulevards. Those who ride in foul weather – be it cold, wet, or inordinately hot – are members of a special club of riders who, on the morning of a big ride, pull back the curtain to check the weather and, upon seeing rain falling from the skies, allow a wry smile to spread across their face. This is a rider who loves the work.

Sadly, I've been off the bike a couple weeks myself. This moving thing is heating up and I'm flying south to Portland in the morning for another day of house hunting. Then Friday I will be with my wife for more house hunting. A great many of the homes in the Portland area have high pitched roofs, with dormers. Which means the "bonus rooms" in those houses make shitty music rooms as the ceiling slopes in from the sides, rather than have a cathedral ceiling. I'm a tall guy, so sloped ceilings reduce the usable space considerably. So many homes that might otherwise be good candidates are being eliminated due to lack of music room options. If we find the right place I can convert a garage bay if I have to, but would prefer not to have to create a room from scratch.

So you guys who can get out and ride... please sprint to a traffic sign or attach the next hill in my honor. I'll be back on the bike, hopefully, before the weather turns.

I haven't ridden in a while, so I set up my bicycle on my Kreitler rollers and spun for an hour while listening to music to get back into the program.

Bob, good luck with your continued search for a house. There's one out there with your name on it.

I live in Michigan in a (very) small town right on Lake Michigan. There aren't too many hills here but I can get some decent elevation. I do most of my riding on country roads, paved and unpaved. What I lack as far as places to go and things to do of an urban area I make up for in uncongested roads for riding. That suits me just fine at this point in time.

Today's supposed to be sunny with a high right around 70. I'll be thinking good thoughts for your house hunting while I'm out riding!

Gary, nice work with the rollers. I love mine. They're are the next best thing when you aren't able to get out and ride. Just be careful and don't run into the wall in front off you!

Great to see some posts in this thread again. My riding has been very erratic given my schedule (weekend work, vacations, gear hunting, etc). Doug, good on you mate for getting out and riding regularly.

Have a spare Garmin if you'd like to try. It's the flaky one I posted earlier? Used it again while I was in Maine and it worked flawlessly. Maybe the moisture dried up inside? Don't know, but either way LMK. Think I have a spare mount, too.

Bob, good luck house hunting. As Doug says, I'm sure you will find the perfect one that fits all your needs.

Allen, hopefully things will slow down work wise and allow you to get out for a ride now and then. I just have to get out while the weather is good (meaning no snow) because once that white stuff starts to fall it's pretty much over until the spring. I do get out a few times during the winter but not enough to keep my fitness level where I like it.

If you want to send the Garmin out my way I'll give it a try. That's a very nice gesture. Do you still have my address?

I was got out yesterday morning did 30 miles with a friend. It's been hard to get rides in this summer seeing its been raining every day.

I was able to get out and ride again today after work. It was a little windy but all in all a good ride.

Keep on rolling Dave! What's the weather been like down your way?

Hi Doug
It's been pretty nice last few days this summer we pretty much have had those Florida afternoon thunder storms really killed my after work rides. How about where your at.

We had a great summer here in Michigan. The 90 degree days were few and far between and the rain came early on and has been pretty non-existent since August. We did have a nice downpour yesterday morning though. It's nice to finally be able to put in some miles.

IM WI BIKE copy.jpg

This was one half of the bikes in the transition area for IM WI. Long day on the bike. Steady head wind for the last 70 plus miles but overall a great day. I finished my first IM in 15:03

Wow! Congrats on your first IM. 70 miles with a headwind, no thanks. You're a monster! :woot:

I rode 28 miles Monday and 40 yesterday. Leaving me to do 22 between today and tomorrow to get to 1000 for the summer. All but a handful of those miles were done between the middle of May and now. I think this has been the most riding that I've done in a summer to date.

My legs were stiff yesterday since I don't usually go out on consecutive days. It took me about 15 miles to get things going! I'm hoping to get the 22 in today but rain is in the forecast. If I can get out before the rain starts all is good. I don't mind riding in the rain as long as it's not raining when I leave.

Of course I just heard thunder...

Keep on ridin', Doug! I've been doing light miles myself as I've been working on weekends and my schedule has been super erratic.

Doug, the Garmin is packed (w mount). I just haven't had a chance to mail it out yet. Been swamped at work!:( It'll go out by this weekend, sir.

cheers

Thanks Allen, I did 26 today and made it to my 1000 mark! :exciting: I have some things going on that will keep me from riding for a while so I wanted to reach my goal before summers end. Which means that the Garmin will get here just at the right time. How many times can I thank you my friend?!!!

Life will always get in the way off the things we really want to do, but there will come a time when you'll be able to accomplish some of those goals. The key is to savor the moment, knowing that it won't last forever...
