DAC Suggestions Please!

I have not but I have found a new DAC that I am totally in love with. I have moved the Teac to secondary use as a headphone amp and may end up selling it eventually even.

The new DAC is the Wyred 4 Sound DAC-1 LE. Their newly upgraded model where they have added DSD (one of the best the ESS9018 chip) and more. A Femto clock is a $125 option and it is just amazing. As good as you get in this level. 6Moons compared it to DACs costing 8-10 times higher....

Budget?

The new special deal that W4S has on the DAC-1 LE (limited edition) is $999, plus $125 for the Femto clock so $1124. According to what I researched they took the DAC-1, that was extremely highly rated, added DSD (using the ESS9018 chip!!!!), improved the USB input and several other internal improvements and keep the price the same. Then they offered the clock upgrade as a cheap add on.

From what I was told it is essentially identical to the DAC-2 DSD-SE without the pre-amp functions; volume control, HT pass through, remote, etc. So if you are looking for a DAC only this is a fantastic unit. I am absolutely loving it!!!

To the original poster, The PS Audio DS DAC is wonderful but may be more than you want to spend, their new DAC looks promising but have yet to hear it.

Auralic - Great DAC for sure, PM me for some more info...

Another two to consider right in your price ballpark are the Exogal Comet and the Bryston BDA-3, both are out of this world good for the money IMHO.

Yeah yeah I ALMOST sell all these brands. But for good reason... ;-)

I'm curious if anyone has experience with or done a comparison of the Luxman DA-06 with the Exogal Comet Plus. Both of them have been described in reviews and forums as highly musical, like analog yet plenty of detail. Any thoughts?

Jeff from Exogal gave me a Comet to review. I had the Comet plus for 1 month and I also own the Luxman. They are 2 different animals. The Comet is more similar to the PSA DSD with great air, transparency and wide sound stage, but the Comet is more holographic, almost 3D in presentation. My friends that heard it said it was almost like surround sound. It has more bloom than the PSA which I have also had in my system. I can't say that it was any more or less musical.

I also got to hear the Comet at Axpona last year in the Audio-Kenesis room with Atma-Sphere gear and it was one of the better rooms.

The Luxman on the other hand is warmer with a lush, rich midrange and excellent midrange depth which makes it sound like it is less transparent. But it has good transparency and a wide sound stage. It has a heavier sound to it and it is more analog. The sweet spot for the Luxman is music in the 352 to 384khz. The Lux has more prominent bass and is more musical but it sacrifices a little detail compared to the Comet and PSA.

Larry,

FYI, I've just ordered a Schiit Gungnir Multibit. Of course, this will replace my Bifrost Multibit -- such is my esteem of the Multibit.

Those with the shekels who are considering a Schiit Multibit should probably go for the Yggdrasil. But the Yggy is beyond my budget, especially with the Cdn dollar in the crapper.
